The Jets have been expected to release linebacker bust Vernon Gholston at some point, but the report coming out Monday night that they cut Gholston, defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, defensive end Jason Taylor AND right tackle Damien Woody is pretty shocking.

Woody confirmed the news, as first reported by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, on his Twitter account Monday night.

"Just informed about my release," Woody tweeted. "I want to thank the Jets and all the fans out there ... it was a great ride!"

Gholston, as noted above, is almost expected, because he's been such a tremendous bust since the Jets drafted him sixth overall in 2008.

Taylor provided the Jets with nice defensive depth in 2010, but he's obviously up there in age and a good candidate for retirement. His contract also reportedly called for a $10 million roster bonus, but it's believed he didn't meet the requirements to unlock that.

Jenkins has been unable to make it past October each of the past two seasons and the $3.75 million he's owed (plus roster bonuses) make him a reasonable target to cut.

Gutting Woody from the roster probably hurts the most, but the Jets said they were moving Vladimir Ducasse to right tackle, which makes Woody expendable.

It's worth noting, too, that Mehta added the Jets might be interested in re-signing all four of the guys listed above, if they were willing to take reduced salaries. That's the definition of a Catch-22 situation, as those players probably feel a little burnt by their employer, but also understand that getting a contract is better than not as the NFL heads into uncertain waters with the labor situation.

Woody is the only loss here. And at this point, he's probably headed towards completely breaking down anyway. What can you say about Gholston that hasn't already been said. Jets have proven they don't need Jenkins, and as for "Mr. Dolphin" Jason Taylor... at least we don't have to root for him anymore. That was nauseating last aeason having to pull for him. Good moves, all in all.

I recall Katzenmoyer had his best season as a sophomore at OSU. He tried to find a way to make himself eligible which was obviously unsuccessful. His stock slipped as a Junior somewhat which explains why NE got him in the later part of the 1st round that year. All I have to say is I bet a lot of teams are now glad he wasn't allowed to come out after his sophomore season.LOL.

Katzenmoyer wasn't a bust in the classic sense- he actually played quite well for his 5 seconds in the league...just got hurt with a neck injury right out of the gate in his first season, and after a few failed surgeries on it, that was it...career over.  Spielman was like the first pick of the 2nd rd, and Pepper was also a 2nd rd. pick.....so not lower rd. picks.  Hawk had a nice season, and has had a decent career, but I'll say has not lived up to expectations.  Gholston pretty much stands alone as a colossal bust, and is really the exception.

ohboy, don't think anyone said Jenkins was injured because of his age. He was just plain injured. Taylor on the other hand. Maybe he can make another trip back down to South Beach.

Gohlston was not a linebacker at OSU, he was an end.

Lauranitis is certainly not a bust.

Katz absolutely a bust.

Looking for a DB - Pick and OSU db everytime.

As a Jets fan. Buyer Beware when drafting Ohio State LB's high in the draft. I'm going back some 30 years to Tom Cousineau. Yes, they had some good ones that I believe were lower round picks like Chris Spielman and Pepper Johnson. However, just about all the first rounders have been colossal busts. AJ Hawk has redeemed himself this past season so he is now an exception. Andy Katzenmoyer and now Vernon Gholston. Rex Ryan gave this guy EVERY chance to salvage his career. Had we had a TRUE pass rusher this year, I believe we win the Super Bowl. Gholston cost us money, cap room and a potential roster spot or two that could.....actually pass rush. Good riddance and hope you enjoy life in the UFL you bum.
Woody is a warrior. Respected him his whole career and played a major role in Tom Brady's early success too. Hope we can retain him later on for sure. Jenkins I believe is still very talented when healthy. However, he's disappointed us three years now with being on the IR. DeVito has been a pleasant surprise so I don't think Jenkins is a big loss.
I do hope we retain Holmes and Edwards. However, I believe we can find a FA comparable to Cromartie to play opposite Revis. I know Rex will draw a lot of prospective FA's who have expressed a desire to play for him. I trust we will upgrade.

As a Jets fan, the prospect of "Big Vlad" at RT on a full-time basis scares the hell out of me.

I knew Gholston could be a bust when they said he would take off plays in college, jason taylor needs to retire hes less than half of the player he used to be
