Report: Patriots sign DT Marcus Stroud

As the window for teams and players to talk contract gets increasingly smaller, the Patriots have shored up their defensive line depth by signing defensive tackle Marcus Stroud.

That's according ESPN's Adam Schefter, who reports that the Pats have signed Stroud to a two-year deal.

Stroud is a three-time Pro Bowler who piled up big stats with the Jacksonville Jaguars during his seven years there after being drafted 13th overall.

After being traded to the Bills in 2008, he never topped three sacks in a single season and struggled on the front line of an absolutely abysmal rush defense, particularly as Buffalo moved to a 3-4 defense in 2010.

The 32-year-old was released by Buffalo a few weeks ago and now finds himself on the roster of a divisional rival.

I don't think it's a bad pickup. It's hard to gauge anyone's ability when he plays for the Bills.  We'll see.

The question is what Marcus Stroud has left.  He was a top-drawer defensive tackle with the Jaguars, but that was a few years ago.  On the other hand, the Patriots have a history of getting good years out of older defensive tackles who were supposed to be on the back end of their careers: Ted Washington, Keith Traylor--last year, it was Gerard Warren. I'm sure the Bills were shedding salary.

Agreed!   Bilicheck is an amazing coach, and Pepper Johnson may just be the best D-Line coach out there.  5 championship teams in 13 year carreer.   This team has the ability to take old players and make them new.  Look at Junior Seau-  dude should have retired after the chargers, but came back and was a complete stud with pats. (too bad manning and tyree ruined his chances at a ring!!!)  Stroud should do well with the pats!

My first reaction was surprise as Stroud is not that well suited for the 3-4 defense.
My second reaction was to be pleased that Marcus has found a team where he may enjoy the fruits of his efforts.
He's a great person and one helluva competitor.  While there was no place for him with the Bills, the rather different circumstances that the Patriots are in makes this a good signing.

Good luck, Marcus... except for two weeks out of the season.

Go Bills!

First to spell correctly. I like this pick-up. Probably on cheap money as most Patriots signings are with veteran freeagents. There had better be some football this fall
