Bob Sanders has been on a tour of various NFL teams over the past week or so -- he swung by Buffalo, visited with Jacksonville and checked in with Rex Ryan's New York squad -- since being released by Indianapolis. But a surprise suitor: the San Diego Chargers, who announced Thursday night that they've signed the former Defensive Player of the Year.

"We are all very excited to add Bob Sanders to our defense," General Manager A.J. Smith said. "We have always held him in high regard. He's a smart, physical, instinctive player. His intensity and playmaking ability can make an immediate impact on our defense."

The Chargers didn't exactly struggle against the pass last season -- they actually ranked No. 1 in passing yards allowed -- but Sanders equates to a calculated gamble that could pay off huge dividends.

[Judge: Sanders the difference in San Diego?]

"There’s no question I'm excited. The fact that Bob was available and excited about being here and then having it work out is great," Head Coach Norv Turner said. "Our guys have unbelievable respect for him and what he's done through the years. Certainly he knows what we’re capable of doing, so it’s a great fit."

The timing is quite interesting, because the NFL and NFLPA just reached a 24-hour extension on CBA negotiations, leaving the window for teams to sign players open another day (although Sanders would probably have had until 11:59 PM EST to ink the deal anyway).

[Prisco: Signing Sanders a good move for Chargers]

While many teams have spent the day dropping costs like crazy by cutting players, the Chargers apparently felt the need to take a calculated gamble on the oft-injured Sanders in an attempt to strengthen to their defense. If Sanders returns to his Pro Bowl form, he'll make one of the best defenses in the league from last year even more dangerous.

Chargers sign Bob Sanders to 1-year deal

and considering the chargers needed no help before sanders arrived in beating the colts...their nemisis AND signing this one year contract they arent on the colts schedule for 2011....unless of course they meet in the playoffs, this was the best destination among the choices he had. and the changes of bob meeting his exteammates in a playoff with him being healthy at the end is very slim.  this is a win win situation for the chargers. they either lose little if he doesnt play or they win big with taking very little chance on signing him.  the colts couldnt take that chance.  resigning peyton manning left very little chance of keeping bob anyways. there is no way they could take that chance of knowing he or isnt he going to play this year with that huge amount due to him this year.  colts fans still love bob. without him we dont have a ring. thanks bob! good luck! hes a good guy!
ask the chargers how hard it is to win a ring. this team has loads of talent and im shocked they still havent won a superbowl. maybe bob can get you one

I thank sanders will fit amazing in there defense it was a great move by the chargers. In my mind they have one of the best offenses in the league especially with rivers backing them up. They defentily need help on special teams and defense. That was a very smart move for the chargers and I will be looking forward to seeing them in the playoffs this year because with that move and there division they will definetly be there.

Chargers sign Bob Sanders to 1-year deal

We all knew Sanders would not sign with the Bills or the Jags, I mean come on!  The guy has played on winning teams with the Colts since he joined the league as well as winning a SuperBowl!. The Jets had a chance with Rex Ryan's defense but maybe last years HBO special and all the nice language scared him off.  In walks the Chargers and a nice one year contract just before a possible strike which keeps him signed for whatever that might be worth such as benefits from the Union while they are on strike but more importantly over the years we have seen some nice games between these two teams and Bob Sanders brings a huge benefit with him and that is inside knowledge of the inner workings of the Colts Defense and that is always helpful to a rival team!

there was no way in hell he was going to sign with the jags or bills.  NO WAY! hes not stupid. and once he got off the plane to both places, he relealized it wasnt going to be either hot as hell 99% humidity, jax or freeze your a$$ off siberia in buffalo.  he was just fishing for what other teams will offer. he may be hurt a lot but hes not stupid. nobody is going to sign on with a team that has a lame duck coach and no talented players surrounding him.
and now he can retire in sunny san diego!

As childish and homeristic as this long as he doesn't want to wear #21...I don't really care that much.

Chargers sign Bob Sanders to 1-year deal

That's BS, I assure you almost everty SD fan wanted him the second he was available. We haven't had a top safety in ages and SD never signs these kinds of players.

Not this Charger fan. I remember what happened the last big name splash was made in free agency. Remember David Boston?
Also, Bob Sanders has played safety in a soft cover two shell. Not exactly what I am hoping for in the new Charger defense.
Sure he has been a play maker. Sure he had a reputation as a hard hitter, but at 5'8" and 200lbs has has to launch himself like a missle to make an impact, and the league has, or is in the process of moving beyond leading with the helmet, and launching on defenseless receivers.
Yes folks were thrilled that he was a willing teammate and would move into the box on run support, and in fairness to the man, he was capable at that. But look where it gets him. The sideline, and trainers table.
Top safety? That is crucial? Didn't hinder their success much...

Charger fans are hilarious.  If anyone else had signed Sanders, they'd tell you what a horrible signing it was, and that he can't stay healthy.  But they sign him and it's a GREAT signing, and Kudos to the Lord Of No Rings.  Sheeeeesh.

Chiefs fans are cute when they try to troll.
Charger fans like those commenting are searching for what is missing, and why they haven't won it all with one of the best young QBs in the game (though that logic alone is flawed).
The only thing missing is complete overspending in free agency right?
Not if you are the teams that have won it all, and built completely through the draft that is...

But use of the Lord of No rings?

What exactly have the Chiefs won in the last 42 years? Or 6 less than the Chargers last Championship?
Or 26 more years since the Chargers last Championship game appearance?

The Chiefs won the division last year...good for them, but both Chief and Charger fans should be worried about the Raiders. They whupped us both each chance they had.

Chargers sign Bob Sanders to 1-year deal

I am too pessimistic being a chargers fan living in Indy to call this a great move.  WE will be lucky to get Bob on the field healthy for 8 games - anything more than that, well - see the old parable about eggs and chickens.

If the Chargers didn't break the bank on him, then thats for the best.  If Bob can be an effort and position leader, that would be outstanding.
