Mark it down: June 6, the day Plaxico Burress will be a free man again. The New York State Department of Correctional Services announced that the former Giants wide receiver has earned time off on the basis of good behavior. Burress’ three months early release has long been expected. He’ll wind up skipping 1/7 of his original two-year prison sentence.

After unknowingly shooting himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub in 2008, Burress pleaded guilty in 2009 to attempted criminal possession of a weapon.

The “who will sign Burress?” discussion already commenced several weeks ago. The early release is great fortune for Burress because it will allow him a few extra weeks of training time before teams likely will start taking close looks at him when training camps open up in late July/early August. Roger Goodell has said Burress can sign with any team once he’s a free man.

Some good points made...however I might add that he was dumb enough to shoot himself, I think he's damn lucky he didn't shoot someone else.

Tough break, don't need people toting guns in NYC.  A lot of good is going to come from Plaxico (or the millions of dopes like him) toting guns around.  Stupid law?  Seriously?  Makes me feel safer.  That being said, I hear he's kept in shape and hope Giants sign him and his prison muscles.

It's a pretty bad law, borderline unconstitutional, let's be honest. Burress actually did have a permit for his gun but it was a Florida permit, it's not like this is a case of a completely unregistered gun. So Burress should have applied for a New York permit you say? But the law also prevents Burress from applying for a New York State permit because he is a nonresident. As I said, crappy law, borderline unconstitutional.
Was what Burress did pretty stupid? Yes.
Is the law he got busted on pretty stupid. Yes.
Did Plaxico Burress deserve more jail time than Michael Vick? No.
I'd say the system could use some improvement at least.
