Rivera, Elway to see Newton, not Mallett Tuesday

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and Broncos new football czar John Elway will be on hand for Cam Newton’s pro day on Tuesday. Let the rumors start flying.

Rivera’s attendance is not super significant given that the Panthers will have Newton (projected to go No. 1 overall in Rob Rang's latest mock draft) visit their facility at some point. Elway's attendance is more noteworthy given that he seems to have some hesitations about Tim Tebow.

Because Rivera and Elway are attending Newton’s pro day, he won’t get to see Ryan Mallett’s C. Newton (US Presswire)pro day. Auburn and Arkansas pro days are both slated for Tuesday.

Overlapping pro days are problematic because not only will scouts/coaches/front office execs not get to see both players (and thus compare both players), but they could also be tipping their hand to other teams. (If a team sends its GM, head coach and VP of college scouting to Newton’s workout while having its offensive coordinator and regional scouts go to Mallett (projected by Rang to go 12th to the Vikings), which player would you say they’re most interested in?)

Peter King wrote about it in Monday Morning Quarterback.

"Really drives me nuts,'' one top college scout told me Sunday. Not that there aren't going to be conflicts. But to see so many big schools loading up on such a small number of days. Today, one major school (Tulsa) has its Pro Day; next Monday, there are two (Central Michigan, LSU). Thursday, 13 major schools have Pro Days. Who plans this stuff?

I understand coaches and scouts want the weekend off.... And to get to Baton Rouge you'd have to travel on Sunday unless you were flying private. But for nobody to have noticed Mallett and Newton working out on the same day? Not good.

It doesn’t have to be this way. A little planning and coordination could take care of most conflicts. Colleges, of course, are not obligated to make their schedules convenient for the NFL. But it would be beneficial to them if they did. Obviously, the more players a college can get to the NFL, the easier it is for that college to recruit talent. The whole point of a pro day workout is to help get players to the NFL.

It’s not just about the top tier players, either. If Rivera or Elway, for example, were able to attend Mallett’s workout, they’d also get a firsthand look at the rest of Arkansas’ draft prospects. In the very least, that exposure could later be advantageous when it comes to signing undrafted free agents.

I correctly predicted Vick would tear teams up but the ultimate x-factor is the injury bug.  Without injury to one of the top WRs in the game, they do exactly as predicted.  Vick didn't lose any games, he played unbelievable.  Vick is a ball player!!
NO, NO, NO, NO!!!! you said yourself that Vick would tear teams up and WIN the super bowl in the 2010/2011 season and you were WRONG! sorry, but i dont trust a genius when they say something and are way off base and you were off base. the Eagles were out in the wild card round.
Tebow was a project going in.  He was drafted way too high and cost a coach his job. Denver is not for one instance thinking of drafting Fairley.  Fox has already hinted he likes Newton.  When he saw him at the combine in person, he walked away very impressed.  Google that up and you will clearly see why Elway will be there.
Tebow is a project going in and was drafted too high, BUT he did NOT cost a coach his job and saying that is stupid. What cost McDaniels his job is that he traded Cutler away, replaced him with Orton, traded Marshall away, had a great passing game, BAD run game and the defense still hasnt been fixed. then the final nail was the mini-spygate scandel.
Most scouts have noted he is further along than Tebow, Young, and Bradford at this juncture.  Moon said he was a s accurate a QB he had ever seen.  Dilfer was more than impressed with him.
Well those scouts are stupid. Maybe he's ahead of Tebow and Young with his mechanics, BUT Bradford, yeah right. Sam Bradford is better than Newton and will always be better than Newton.
Lastly, breaking records at Standford isn't hard to do.  Did they even have a football team last year?  LOL!  Standford and football is a joke!  Luck is injury prone, has a weak knee and other ailments.
ok, First off injury prone??? i havent seen him hurt often. Second, breaking Stanford records is easy huh. Well, John Elway holds the Stanford records, yeah breaking those will be simple. i mean passing Elway is something everyone can do.
Question you have to ask yourself is, why do you like Luck and hate Newton?  Interesting!
ok, i will answer it. Cam Newton is coming from an offense where he looked to the sidelines for a play, he made no adjusments and the offense was WAY too simple. in college, the spread offense Cam ran works, but in the pros, it FAILS. ADD to that, in SOME games Newton ran 20 plus times!!!!!! i double dare him to run 20 times in at least 6 NFL games!!!!! Know what happens when you run 20 plus times in an NFL game and you are a quarterback???? INJURIES!!! and that's what will happen, add to that, Luck is a very smart guy and like Newton he CAN run.

Right, because Elways records were just pathetic numbers. Anybody can pass for over 9k yards and 77TDs passing. Its not like Elway is in the college HOF or anything.

If Fairley was not there at the Auburn Pro day than Elway wouldn't be there either. The Newton thing maybe a good ploy for teams liking him so it can be benificial to us.

OK gentlemen, believe as you must but don't say I didn't tell you so.  I correctly predicted Vick would tear teams up but the ultimate x-factor is the injury bug.  Without injury to one of the top WRs in the game, they do exactly as predicted.  Vick didn't lose any games, he played unbelievable.  Vick is a ball player!!

Tebow was a project going in.  He was drafted way too high and cost a coach his job.  He has been throroughly evaluated for the long run not for the gimmicky offense he can only run with his inabilty to come from under center and read coverage.  Denver is not for one instance thinking of drafting Fairley.  Fox has already hinted he likes Newton.  When he saw him at the combine in person, he walked away very impressed.  Google that up and you will clearly see why Elway will be there.  Fox put a big wrinkle in the system when he complimented Newton on his passing abilities.  He can make all the throws.  Most scouts have noted he is further along than Tebow, Young, and Bradford at this juncture.  Moon said he was a s accurate a QB he had ever seen.  Dilfer was more than impressed with him.

Lastly, breaking records at Standford isn't hard to do.  Did they even have a football team last year?  LOL!  Standford and football is a joke!  Luck is injury prone, has a weak knee and other ailments.

Believe as you must but I have inside info you guys do not...how dare you doubt the Genius!
you dont have inside info and i DO doubt the SO called Genius. This is the SAME guy who said that Vick would destroy other teams to a Super Bowl and you got that wrong, sorry, but i do doubt the Genius on Denver. You have Kyle Orton as your starter and Tim Tebow as your backup. you do NOT give up on a first round pick in one year, that's VERY stupid to do. NOW i could see Carolina doing it because the coach wants a franchise QB, but John Fox never cared about franchise passers. he had Delhomme for years, he will go for Nick Fairley.
Elway loves Newton believe me.  Tebow is not as great as some of you think or want him to be.
i wont believe you because i think Elway loves Luck and if this team struggles on offense again and Tebow fails when he gets his chance, Luck will be the guy. Luck is the guy breaking all the records at Stanford where Elway shined.
unsettled in the pocket and his mechanics are terrible.  3 ints in 4 games is a lot and came when he forced the ball instead of seeing the whole field.  It has been noted and they have invested incredible funds into grooming him but he is slow to progress.  The only reason he started the last few games was to get a fair evaluation in game time situation.
and GUESS who else will be unsettled in the pocket and have poor mechanics??? Newton!!! the spread offense tends to cause that, especially one where the QB runs over 12 times and hate to say this, but 3 ints in 4 games isnt bad for a rookie. Sanchez had 20 in 16 and considering that he's a project it's a good think that he didnt look like Clausen did. Tebow will and should get at least one more look, Newton isnt who Elway wants to see, it's Fairley. Fox went to a Super Bowl because of a GREAT defensive line. he has a pass rusher in Dummerville, but is missing the Kris Jenkins.
While on paper it appears he did okay, when you look inside the game and numbers he made numerous mistakes and basivcally given a watered down offense.  Defensive coordinators could easily prepare for him if he ever became a starter.  Simply put 9 in the box and fill quick passing lanes.  Confuse him a little with desquised coverage/ blitz and it is int heaven
First off, the watered down offense you mention is the fault of a coach who was basically new, the offense kinda had to be watered down when a new coach came in who Tebow didnt know. SECOND, defensive coordinators will easily prepare for Newton when he starts. IF he's a Panther like i think he is, i see them going 3 and 13, possibly 5 and 11 and picking high and IF Landry Jones or Luck or Barkley is on the board when they pick, Panther fans may want one of those QBs next year.

Ftballmoron 3 INT in 4 games isn't bad for a rookie in his first starts, and way to go off on a limb and say blitzzing a rookie is effective. Elway won't be looking at a first round QB and Tebow at FB is totally unbelievable. 4 games in the league and he isn't an all pro at reading coverage...hell it took Manning a full season to come around. I don't think Tebow will be a great QB but you sir are just a troll. Inside info is laughable, just because you talk to yourself doesn't make it a reliable source. 9 in the box with a fairly prolific passing attack and no running game...good call.

Elway could be going to see Newton or, maybe just maybe, he is going to see Nick Fairley.  It is Auburn Pro Day not just Cam Newton Pro Day.

Wow! Elway knows QBs and he loves Newton's upside!  Tebow is having trouble reading defenses, making progression reads and making audibles out of bad plays.  Elway evaluated Tebow in the four games he played and has decided they need a "franchise" QB.   I wouldn't be surprised to see Tebow move to FB next year in Fox system.
FtballMoron, you really havent heard this, you are making stuff up and Tim Tebow will NOT last in Denver if Newton is drafted (which he will NOT!). Tebow is either going to QB in Denver or another city, he may not be good, but he will get a chance to start, just get over it and get ready for it and when he either sucks or is great, talk, but you are a biased fan, you hate Tebow, just to hate him.
In regard to Fairley, it's Newton's day not Fairley.  Fairley will not even be present for this and Elway is clearly there to see Newton without question.  Considering Mallett is throwing the same day goves strong precedence to Newton's abilities.
WRONG!!!! Fairley is the guy i fully believe he's there to see. he knows that Carolina MAYBE stupid enough to take Newton which would leave Fairley free for him to grab.
