Questions about rumored drug use hounded Ryan Mallett at the combine. On Wednesday, the Arkansas quarterback was a guest on the Dan Patrick Show. Patrick asked Mallett very directly if he passed the drug test at the combine.
“Yes sir,” Mallett responded (immediately).
Small problem here. As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, there’s no way Mallett knows yet whether or not he passed the drug test.
Florio writes, “Players who fail the drug test find out about it in April. Less than two weeks removed from peeing in a cup with 300-plus other incoming rookies and having the contents subjected to testing and analysis and confirmation testing if a preliminary positive is generated, there’s no way Mallett or any other player has received an affirmative “all clear.”
It’s possible Mallett interpreted Patrick’s question differently than the question appears in print. (Maybe Mallett was merely expressing his confidence that he passed the test.) Nevertheless, one thing is clear: Mallett will have to continue to face questions about rumored drug use over the next few weeks.
