Questions about rumored drug use hounded Ryan Mallett at the combine. On Wednesday, the Arkansas quarterback was a guest on the Dan Patrick Show. Patrick asked Mallett very directly if he passed the drug test at the combine.

Ryan Mallett

“Yes sir,” Mallett responded (immediately).

Small problem here. As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, there’s no way Mallett knows yet whether or not he passed the drug test.

Florio writes, “Players who fail the drug test find out about it in April.  Less than two weeks removed from peeing in a cup with 300-plus other incoming rookies and having the contents subjected to testing and analysis and confirmation testing if a preliminary positive is generated, there’s no way Mallett or any other player has received an affirmative “all clear.”

It’s possible Mallett interpreted Patrick’s question differently than the question appears in print. (Maybe Mallett was merely expressing his confidence that he passed the test.) Nevertheless, one thing is clear: Mallett will have to continue to face questions about rumored drug use over the next few weeks.

Mallett's answer about drug test raises eyebrows

I can with out a shread of doubt tell you whether I did or didn't pass a drug test without waiting for results to come out.  Florio, as usual, is just being an a$$!

Mallett's answer about drug test raises eyebrows

Really?  This is a story?  If you ask me if I've ever been shot in the head, I can honestly tell you "No sir..."

Somewhat similar to why I don't need to wait for somebody else to tell me in April that I didn't take any drugs.  Because, y'know, I was already there when I didn't take them.  Pretty confident in that response.

Mallet is saying he knows there aren't any drugs in his system, just like I'm telling you I know there aren't any lead slugs in my head.

We're both pretty confident in our responses, whether other folks might question our responses, or not.

(I'm praying I don't have to answer to unfounded rumors that I've been shot in the head-- the media always distorts this stuff, it's a pain in the ass...)

Mallett's answer about drug test raises eyebrows

Isn't it obvious that the "it's possible Mallett interpreted..." paragraph at the end is EXACTLY what happened? If you haven't taken any drugs, presumably you can answer with confidence that you passed the test even before receiving the "official" results. Talk about a non-story...

Not a story.  Absolutely not a story.  Sounds to me like he's 100% confident he passed his drug test - so that's how he answered it.

Good work on making something out of total crap, guys.
