E. Bennett (US Presswire)
Lost in Green Bay amidst the noise from the Super Bowl XLV euphoria and news about contract extensions for head coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson is the story about the changes to the Packers coaching staff.

The story is that there weren’t many stories. The only assistant to leave town was wide receivers coach Jimmy Robinson, who took the receiver coach position in Dallas. Maintaining virtually an entire Super Bowl winning coaching staff is extremely rare.

Worth noting is the man the Packers tapped to fill the receiver coach position: Edgar Bennett. The same Edgar Bennett who ran the ball for the Packers from ’92-’97. Bennett has been on the coaching staff since 2005, but as a running backs coach. How does a former running back and five-year running back coach suddenly become in charge of wide receivers?

“I think we can (listen to a former running back). We’re a coachable group,” wideout James Jones told Kareem Copeland of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. I know Edgar is going to push us to the max. He’s a great coach. I’m sure he’ll get a lot of knowledge from a lot of receiver coaches, so he’ll be well prepared to coach us during the season.”

Donald Driver is equally optimistic.

“Crazy part is when I came here, E.B. was in Chicago. That just shows how much of a relationship we’ve had with one another,” Driver said. “We have also talked and let each other know exactly what we feel. I know he’s going to bring something better to us and we’re going to get  better as a group.”

The key factor here is that the Packers already have a cohesive veteran group of receivers. Driver, Jones, Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson have worked together in the same offense for several years. Driver has 13 seasons under his belt; Jennings has five, Jones four and Nelson three.

Good pickup, that is former long snapper Rob Davis chatting up Brett Favre in Minnesota.  I remember when Mike Holmgren was first hired as head coach in Green Bay.  The local yokel media, not knowing any better, would approach defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes and ask him about the offense or offensive coordinator Sherm Lewis and ask him about the defense.  It's nice to see that Joe Sportsbeat got a national gig.

Good call.  I think that is former long snapper Rob Davis who is now in charge of player development.  Apparently they don't care about checking facts or correcting obvious mistakes when they're pointed out by readers.  What do we matter, anyway?

What's next...Leroy Butler (SS) coming back to coach running backs and Jackie Harris (TE) coming back to coach defensive lineman. I know that a capable coach can coach anything but I once read about an NFL assistant coach who was an expert on offense...or was it defense. The funny thing about that is that he had spent time coaching both offense and defense in the NFL. Just how much of an expert can one be if they spent extensive time coaching on both sides of the ball? Oh well. The Packers must no what they are doing? They won with Aaron Rodgers who was one of the top college prospects of Jeff Tedford. Except for Trent Dilfer none of his highly touted college qb's ever amounted to much...until now!

Are you kidding me?  I'm not even a Packers fan, and I knew right off the bat that he was not Edgar Bennett.  There is no excuse for this.

The gentleman shown in the picture is named Rob Davis - former long snapper, and the team's current Director of Player Development.

Wow. did this guy seriously just copy and paste a picture of the first African-American wearing a green polo he could find? Nice observation dackjawson, I just googled and found no pic of Bennett that slightly resmbled the guy in the picture. That looks like Winston Moss to me.
