Report: Owners have cash to last through season

The ruling where Judge David Doty shut down the NFL owners' ability to use more than $4 billion in television contracts during any work stoppage quickly rid the world of any notion that the billionaires could last two years without football.

I mean, they could, but not without hemorrhaging cash. However, a report Monday in the Wall St. Journal indicates that the gentlemen who run the 32 NFL franchises could in fact last one full season without football.

The WSJ report notes that the league would only need that money "if the labor strife drags on into the 2012 season" because "owners have already set aside enough money to cover them in case the 2011 season is cancelled."

That the NFL has a contingency plan for not being able to use the $4 billion isn't shocking, because Greg Aiello mentioned as much almost immediately following Doty's ruling. Also, the gentlemen in question are billionaire; they didn't gain that status without knowing a) to always have a backup plan and b) how to save money.

And they can almost certainly weather the financial storm of an NFL-less world than most of the players in the league. But that doesn't mean that not making a pile of money during the 2011 season is something that the owners want to see happen.

Report: Owners have cash to last through season

GOOD, NOW I HOPE THE PLAYERS GO BROKE.  FEEL WHAT THE NATION HAS BEEN DEALING WITH FOR YEARS.  DOWN WITH THE PLAYERS.
OH NO! MY CAPS LOCK KEY IS BROKEN, TOO! Oh, no, wait - all I had to do was press it again. The irony of your sentiments is hilarious. You understand that the main reasons the nation has been dealing with what we have been dealing with is exactly what the owners do, right? The owners saddle you and I with a huge tax bill when we subsidize their very existence, especially when we pay for their stadiums. Same goes for all the welfare and subsidies we give to other large corporations, and the bill for all that money given to people who couldn't possibly need it less goes to who? Us.

But yeah, down with the players. They must be greedy for not lying down and taking the greed of the owners. You do realize it is the owners who have demanded more money, and that the players only wanted what they already had, right? It's only because the owners made such a demand that the players are asking for anything else - like, oh, say, evidence to back up the owners' claim that they're losing money. By the way, the owners are not losing money. They're simply not making as many millions of dollars as the have in the past. Big difference.

I hope the owners hold their ground and tell the players to deal with it and make a few million playing a game. Or go find a real job and see if anything out there pays a fraction of PRO sports money.
Except that for the analogy to have any merit whatsoever, they would have to be the best in the world at what they did at the "real job", which probably would mean that they would make pretty damn good money at it. See, this what you get when you pretend that you could play NFL football. You can't. These players didn't get into the NFL by luck or by some kindeness on the part of the owners. They got there by being the best in the world at what they do, and they got to be the best in the world at what they do by working their butts off.
The system was broken, the players are greedy...
Sorry? The owners demanded a new deal in which they get more money, but it's the players who are being greedy? Indoctrinated by corporate propaganda much?
I hope the lockout lasts an entire year and that there is no 2011 season, just so that dumb stupid morons, who never went to class and took advantage of getting an education at some of our best academic institutions, will be reminded that were it not for the NFL, they would be back in their crappy small time college towns driving delivery trucks and working as bouncers in strip joints.  Idiots !
Citation needed, or this is what it appears to be: completely made-up crap. Despite the kid-glove treatment they receive, the players still had to adhere to academic standards. They went to class or they were off the team. And stop acting like the NFL came along and scooped them out of college to grant them fame and riches for no reason. The NFL drafted these players because they are the best in the world at what they do. They got to be in the NFL by working their butts off, not because the NFL just randomly picked them out of a crowd. The accurate statement is: If it weren't for their natural athletic talent, elite program, tons of hard work and pain and sweat, and rising to the top through determination and consistent high-level performance, they would be back in their crappy, small time, college towns driving delivery trucks and working as bouncers in strip joints. Maybe you should know what you're talking about before casually tossing out words like idiot, dumb, stupid, and morons. Because otherwise, you just sound like all of those words.

On a side note, it is no end of hilarious to me that all you believers in  the American Dream and free-market capitalism always seem to side with the socialist, welfare-riddled corporations and never the self-made, entrepreneurial people who rose to the top by working hard and being the best. I thought that's what was supposed to happen in the fairyland you people believe in: hard work and determination paying off. But no, it's the taxpayer-subsidized owners (who are the ones demanding more money, not the players) who are the shining examples of all that is good and decent. Sublime, willful ignorance.

Report: Owners have cash to last through season

The owners are billionaires without football and get most of their income outside of sports so of course they could survive for  ayear. If need be they could infuse some of their personal wealth into a franchise if they need to.

People need to understand. Owners didnt get rich off football, they were rich before footbal and used their wealth to buy a team. (except places where it has passed down through family, ie, Steelers and Giants)

Ha!  Yes, reminds of a cartoon back during the '95 baseball strike where a player shows up at the front door of a residence and asks the owner "Mow your yard for $25,000 ? "
