Report: De Smith to cut salary to $0

Roger Goodell and Jeff Pash recently announced that they'd be cutting their respective salaries to $1 until a new CBA is reached. Not to be outdone, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith has undercut them and will reportedly set his salary at $0.

That's according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, who cites sources that indicate Smith's moving to his salary to that of a volunteer.

The news isn't too shocking, of course, because Smith previously stated he'd take a big salary cut if there'd been a deal before the Super Bowl. (At the time, he offered "68 cents.") Additionally, a salary "cut" by either side is wholly symbolic. While they won't make the same money until there are games played, they've still got cash in the bank and they'll still likely have bonus money waiting once the NFL resumes play.

It's also worth noting that Goodell and Pash also previously announced their salary cuts in the event of a work stoppage.

So, yeah, it's a public relations maneuver by both sides, with the point being to show everyone that they care so much about the negotiations that they're willing to make personal sacrifices.

All of which is to say that salary cuts for the people in charge of two clearly embattled sides do nothing to actually advance any discussion about a new deal designed to get football to the folks with salaries who really matter: the fans.

I didn't realize He needed to cut his salary to zero...I mean the organization he is the Executive Director of doesn't technically exist at the moment, why were they still paying him in the first place. In normalland if your "company" closes, you don't get paid....

D. Smith cut his salary to $0.  Whew.  That was a close one.  For a minute there I was afraid the players wouldn't be able to afford him with them being locked out.  He's done so much good for the negotiation so far.  Here's a variation on an oldie but a goody:  What do you call DeMaurice Smith and Jeff Pash at the bottom of the ocean?  A good start...

How bout instead of cutting your salaries to 0, you give me your salary for each day you're missing. Or....donate your salaries to a useful cause...like my pocket. Ok seriously. Donate your salaries, don't just stop getting paid.

I couldn't asgree with you more Kookaburra. DaPimp set the tone 6 months ago when he laid out his strategy and suggested through the media that the players were at war. This is not how you go about negotiating. What we have seen unfold in the last few weeks is exactly according to the NFLPA plan. It is a self fulfilling prophecy. Shame on the players for handing their livelihood over to this man. From what I have seen reported by credible sources (I don't really listen to a word either of the parties say at this point), the owners have really been the only side giving any concessions. I don't see where the players are "negotiating, I see them demanding. De Smith is getting what he deserves now, for what he is going to get in the end will be less than he turned down last week.

I believe, although the Union has decertified, they still exist as a trade organization.

Thus, Smith still has a position, a title, and a salary, should he choose to accept it.

I disagree with the notion that now, he's getting paid what he's worth...

I just don't see this ending in favor of the players, and when all is said and done, his actions will have cost the players dearly.

So, even at zero dollars, his price is too high.
