Why does Belichick not have to follow the rules?

Belichick Posted by Pete Prisco

NEW ORLEANS --  New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick basically stuck out his middle finger to the other 31 coaches in the NFL Tuesday.

How else can you explain his not attending a supposedly mandatory media breakfast here at the NFL league meetings?

The other 31 coaches all showed up, some probably a bit reluctantly, but not Belichick.

And word is the league will do nothing about it.

He's bigger than the game. Didn't you know? There is no arguing that Belichick is a great coach. But does that mean he gets to adhere to his own rules?

I can tell you this: Several coaches were more than aware that he wasn't there and weren't thrilled that they had to be and he wasn't there.

I just hope one of them has the guts to call him out on it. Rib him about it.

"So your time is more valuable than ours?" they should say.

Why wouldn't you? He's just a peer, even if he sometimes acts like he isn't.

This is just another way of Belichick showing his arrogance. It's like when he pushed that photographer a couple of years ago. Or when he got caught in Spygate.

Rules are for fools?

Too bad the biggest fool Tuesday was the guy who doesn't follow them.

Why does Belichick not have to follow the rules?

He's a cheater.  Simple as that.  The only reason he's "untouchable" is because the commish has no balls.  For Roger to destroy those tapes before anyone saw them is a slap in the face to NFL fans.  It also leads one to believe the scale of Belicheat's measures were drastic.  Belichick wasn't a legendary coach when he was with the Browns, and the Patriots lost to the Giants in the Superbowl after his cheating was exposed. Obvious.

Why does Belichick not have to follow the rules?

What exactly do coaches do at a media breakfast?  Sit there and either try to avoid being baited by some paparazzi journalist or just recycle the same cliched response for the 4,000 time about how I'm proud of our guys and we'll get them next year?  You know the coaches are not saying one thing about the work stoppage, decertification or anything relevant to the state of the NFL right now.  31 coaches attended the media breakfast and the best Prisco can do is write about the one guy who didn't show up.  I know, he's saving the good stuff, all the scoops and insight gleaned, for a slow news period, say late March when the draft has already been done to death and there's nothing to write about.  Thanks Pete, I'll be looking forward to that column.

Why does Belichick not have to follow the rules?

Mr Pete:

You answered your own question "He's bigger than the game. Didn't you know?"  Belichick has brought three Super Bowl Championships to the Patriots' franchise.  As long as Belichick continues to win, he is untouchable.  Although Coach Belichick embarrasses the franchise with the spying charges and his resultant middle finger salute to Roger Goodell, shows no concern the breakup of his marriage, exhibits the disdain of the rest of the National Football League, he still is looked upon as a man with no flaws.  When the fans and ownership become tired of the early home playoff exits, then they will tire of his act.  After two or three losing consecutive seasons, the players start talking about "how the game has passed him by," fans and ownership will call for his head.  Until then, the Patriots will keep jamming the "three Super Bowl rings in four years."  Winning is the ultimate deodorant.

Regards,
Robert Kraft
