Bengals in the early-round market for a QB

This may not come as a surprise because of the Carson Palmer situation in Cincinnati, but the Bengals need some help at the quarterback position.

And according to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer -- who also notes that Ryan Mallett will be Cincy on Thursday and Friday -- they're almost definitely going to use a pick on a QB in either the first or second rounds.

Which means that more so than in most years past, the No. 1 overall spot is a first domino that could go in a number of directions. See, Cincinnati would likely take, or consider taking -- according to Reedy -- Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert with the fourth-overall pick.

But if they're both gone (which is a decent possibility), then the Bengals will turn their attention to the second round, where they'll consider quarterbacks like Mallett, Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton, Jake Locker and Colin Kaepernick.

Which, honestly, isn't that horrible of a spot to be in -- Ponder and Dalton are considered as "pro-ready" as anyone in the draft, and would likely fit well with what Jay Gruden wants to run, offensively, in Cincy.

Getting someone who could step in right away would also go a much longer way to leveraging Palmer from jumping into retirement than would the Bengals rolling into the season with only he and his brother Jordan Palmer as roster options for signal-calling purposes.

If they take a top teir wide receiver first like AJ Green or Julio Jones (providing Cam and Blaine are gone) I would say that hoping Ponder is done with the injuries thing they get him.  He is a good QB, and is as they say pro ready.  Mallet isn't that bad either, but his off the field issues make him a risk, face it he's too cocky.  Yes, Cam is too, this coming from a HUGE AU fan.  I would love to see Julio Jones go first to the Bengals and the Ponder in the second round.  This is just my two sense though.

I am really hoping the Bengals have the opportunity to draft Ponder in the second round.

Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert are both a reach in the top 5 in my opinion but they are the two best QB's in the draft. Although Ponder, Dalton, Mallett, and Kaepernick are not far off and are would be much better value in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

Mallett is not a bad option for Jay Gruden's offense but just needs to be a little more mobile.

Hopefully the Bengals can re- sign Cedric Benson to pound the ball and utilize Bernard Scott more in the play action. Then bring back Jonathan Joseph, move Rey Maualuga to MLB, keep Carlos Dunlap in the starting lineup, and maybe just maybe the Bengals could have a winning season in 2011.

Maybe Laughing

I would love to see the Bengals take Locker in the second round. Time to move on with guys who still have the stones to play in the NFL. I would also love to see that cry-baby Carson Palmer crawling away like the spineless loser he really is.  Cincinnati doesnt need you.

Palmer better not puss out and retire before the draft. I hope he waits until opening weekend (if there is one) to retire.
