Please ignore the silly 'Favre to Panthers' rumor

Yesterday, I could have sworn I heard something about Brett Favre going to the Panthers. However, because it was Monday morning, I simply chalked it up to "not enough coffee."

Turns out though, there was a brief mention of Favre heading to Charlotte yesterday, and it stemmed from a ridiculously casual blind-item mention by Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press.

"Don't discount the possibility of Brett Favre, who turns 42 in October, returning next season, but not with the Vikings," Walters wrote. "Maybe Carolina."

Um, or perhaps not. Yes, the Panthers have employed Jake Delhomme, and yes, they've often been a safe haven for veteran quarterbacks because of Carolina's penchant for running the ball and simply managing possessions from the quarterback position, but this is just silly.

For starters, John Fox (the guy who brought in the vets) is no longer in Carolina. Secondly, Favre is over 40. Thirdly, he was involved in a seriously awkward off-the-field scandal, which is the type of thing that owner Jerry Richardson just doesn't go for.

Oh yes, and Darin Gantt of the Herald Online already spent his Monday debunking the possibility.

"In a word (OK, three words), that's not happening," Gantt wrote yesterday. "Ran it up the flagpole early this morning, and the response was swift and sure."

Of course, the really terrifying thing is that Gantt adds "maybe somewhere" to his report, which means that we might not quite be done with the saga of No. 4 just yet. Sigh.

Gracias, Shutdown Corner

Please ignore the silly 'Favre to Panthers' rumor

Nothing but media idiots not wanting to let Favre retire. The ONLY reason he returned in `10 was he thought Minnesota was a superbowl contender. And the media clowns actually believe we`re stupid enough to think he`d come back to the very bottom team in the league? As the saying goes... I might have been born at night.... but it wasen`t LAST night.

In other news, Brett Favre was sighted on his lawn mower wearing a Twins hat. There is now speculation that he could begin a career in baseball as a waterboy.

Charlie Walters is a hack. Those of us in Minnesota know that he wakes up in the morning with nothing and is willing to throw out anything to fill up his little section of the paper. What's next Charlie? "Brock Lesnar is considering a career in ballet... or he may possibly continue his carreer in the UFC."

He makes Sid Hartman look like a source of unbiased, factual information.

This story will live as long as reporters are willing to put microphones in front of Favre to comment on it.

Wow. I love this. More media piling on Brett Farve's retirement-unretirement clasue with the false pretence that they don't want it to happen.
"Of course, the really terrifying thing is that Gantt adds "maybe somewhere" to his report, which means that we might not quite be done with the saga of No. 4 just yet. Sigh."

Guess what, if you don't write about him non-stop, including when he hasn't said a single word in regards to football or coming back, it wouldn't make us all laugh. Personally, I haven't been laughing at Farve, I've been laughing at the media, and especially CBSsports, inmature coverage.

I don't care what anyone says, Minnesota wasn't going to the SuperBowl without him last season. So it didn't happen for them and Farve was one part of the problem.

Does nobody remember his MVP-like performance from two seasons ago? How about when he played for the Jets and this website and many others had him penciled in as the mid-season MVP? Sure, the team collapsed down the stretch and he injured his shoulder and started throwing INT's instead of TD's, but he has actually played in 2 title games in four years and been considered an MVP candidate in 2 of four as well. If that is the model for embarassment, there are a lot of QB's who deserve to get ripped up.

Favre sucked in 4 of the last 6 years, and he was the reason his team lost in the other 2.  I'm a Bucs fan, so pretty please, bring Favre into the Panther organization.

He is done. His streak is over. He has exhausted all reasons to go on.

You really didn't think he was really done did you?  Because of how bad he was last year, and all the off the field non-sense, he now needs one or two years to be in the league, putting up his usual 25-17 stat line, but without causing issues to get his rep back on the right track.  If going out in the NFC Champ game (twice) wasn't good enough, going out with this black cloud over him surely wouldn't be.
