We’ve already told you that Madden ‘12 will be concussion-conscience, meaning a player who suffers a head injury in your virtual game will be out the rest of the contest.

The NY Times gets a little more in-depth into this issue, writing that the game’s announcers actually will explain to the “viewer” that your player is suffering from a concussion and won’t return to the game.

The paper also quoted John Madden saying the reason for the new feature is to mirror the reality of NFL football and because it’s a good teaching tool.

“Concussions are such a big thing, it has to be a big thing in the video game,” Madden told the Times . “It starts young kids –  they start in video games. I think the osmosis is if you get a concussion, that’s a serious thing and you shouldn’t play. Or leading with the head that you want to eliminate. We want that message to be strong.”

Chris Nowinski – who, as the co-director of the Sports Legacy Institute, has been outspoken about the concussion issue – also is excited.

“It’s a great approach to teach kids in a way that no one else can reach,” he said. “Considering how hard it is to reach young kids and expose them early, this is brilliant. You’re training kids from the cradle to play sports more safely. If you get a concussion, come out of the game. You can’t unteach that.”
