JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

J. Russell took another step back in his possible return to the NFL (Getty). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

At some point, don’t you just have to give up hope for former No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell?

He was a bust for the Raiders – one of the biggest busts in NFL history, in fact – and then he got in a bit of trouble for allegedly possession the infamous Purple Drank (a grand jury later declined to indict him, though he had tested positive for codeine before). He’s lost his house, and apparently, he’s lost his will to be a professional athlete.

Yet, all seemed good when life coach John Lucas invited him to Houston in September so the two could work together. About seven months later, Yahoo! Sport’s Jason Cole reports, Lucas is calling it quits.

And if you’re thinking, “What the hell is wrong with Russell?” well, you’re asking the same question I am.

Apparently, the marriage worked out fine in the beginning with Russell motivated to get in shape – presumably, physically and mentally – but eventually, Lucas tired of having to work so hard to get Russell to respond.

If you’re frustrating Lucas, who’s worked with plenty of alcoholics and drug addicts as they try to rehabilitate themselves, then you’re probably not trying too hard to better yourself. Or you’re working really hard at being an idiot.

“The title of your article should be, ‘It’s Over,’” a source told Cole. "It’s just amazing that you could say that about somebody who is 25 years old and just got drafted four years ago. But it’s been almost a year since he got cut and there’s no interest. Even before the lockout, nobody wanted to get near the kid.”

There’s a good reason for that. Even when Russell has worked out for teams – he tried out for the Redskins and Dolphins last November – he’s shown up in the 290-pound range. Obviously, he’s not making a great impression on anybody, and this latest bit of news certainly won’t help.

It’s yet another miserable moment for Russell who’s made a career out of nothing but sadness.

He may be overweight, but I'd still argue he needs to hit the couch -- the psychoanalyst's couch, that is!

I think this guy simply let the money & fame go to his head.

Especially when you have no plan and you're spirit is okay with being lazy!

This is a very sad story, especially when you have millions of people out of work...

YEAH YEAH YEAH LUCAS MIGHT HAVE GIVEN UP, BUT GOD HAS NOT!!!!! I BELEIVE IN THE RESTORATION POWER OF JESUS CHRIST AND I WILL BE PRAYING FOR GOD TO RESTORE AND DELIVER RUSSEL FROM THIS CONDITON WHETHER HE PLAYS FOOTBALL OR NOT . BUT THAT HE HEARS THE CALL OF GOD AND LIVE A FRUITFUL LIFE OF A SPIRIT FILLED MAN OF GOD!!!!

You can "live a fruitful life of a spirit filled man of God" without a god.....

Seriously, Russell is a LOSER.  If God wanted for him to be any other way, he would have done so in the first place.

He’s lost his house, and apparently, he’s lost his will to be a professional athlete.

It is very questionable whether JaMarcus Russell ever had the will to become a professional athlete, but how does one lose his house after receiving that much money just a short few years ago? Un- friggin - believable!

There is virus in the NFL that is beginning to spread, that of the troubled player looking to get paid. These types only want to be good in college, just to collect a large partially guaranteed NFL contract.

Every week it’s someone different doing something stupid.

Peace.

Mayock had this guy pegged as fat at the combine = showing up unprepared for your job interview.  It's not like he unexpectedly flaked out like Leaf maybe did.  People knew he was sorry effort before the draft.

There are so few people that can physically do the things top NFL players must do that teams fall all over themselves to get a guy because they are sure they can teach him work habits and mental parts of the game.  I think they see so many guys with 110% drive that still can't get the job done because they only have 99% of the physical talent, that a guy with 101% of the physical talent makes them lose their minds.  Case in point, Jamarcus Russell could (seriously) throw a football 70 yards ON HIS KNEES.  Which if you are looking for a catapult to storm the castle could be handy, but not so much for 3rd and 7.

Rookie salary cap is a must. but at least it was only the Raiders that got burned by JaMarcus. Al Davis should fire himself as owner of the team, couldn't happen to a nicer owner.
