JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

J. Russell took another step back in his possible return to the NFL (Getty). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

At some point, don’t you just have to give up hope for former No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell?

He was a bust for the Raiders – one of the biggest busts in NFL history, in fact – and then he got in a bit of trouble for allegedly possession the infamous Purple Drank (a grand jury later declined to indict him, though he had tested positive for codeine before). He’s lost his house, and apparently, he’s lost his will to be a professional athlete.

Yet, all seemed good when life coach John Lucas invited him to Houston in September so the two could work together. About seven months later, Yahoo! Sport’s Jason Cole reports, Lucas is calling it quits.

And if you’re thinking, “What the hell is wrong with Russell?” well, you’re asking the same question I am.

Apparently, the marriage worked out fine in the beginning with Russell motivated to get in shape – presumably, physically and mentally – but eventually, Lucas tired of having to work so hard to get Russell to respond.

If you’re frustrating Lucas, who’s worked with plenty of alcoholics and drug addicts as they try to rehabilitate themselves, then you’re probably not trying too hard to better yourself. Or you’re working really hard at being an idiot.

“The title of your article should be, ‘It’s Over,’” a source told Cole. "It’s just amazing that you could say that about somebody who is 25 years old and just got drafted four years ago. But it’s been almost a year since he got cut and there’s no interest. Even before the lockout, nobody wanted to get near the kid.”

There’s a good reason for that. Even when Russell has worked out for teams – he tried out for the Redskins and Dolphins last November – he’s shown up in the 290-pound range. Obviously, he’s not making a great impression on anybody, and this latest bit of news certainly won’t help.

It’s yet another miserable moment for Russell who’s made a career out of nothing but sadness.

JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

If John Lucas gives up on you there is no hope.  John Lucas doesn't give up on anyone, ever.  What a giant waste of time must Russel be to break John Lucas' willingness to help.  Somewhere there is an overpass waiting for a washed up and broke drug addicted ex-NFL player to make it his home.

JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

well, hopefully he's been investing the money from that idiotic contract, but something tells me he's probably not going to care until he goes bankrupt. If you ask me, there's some psychological problems behind this that need to be fixed before anything. But he does have one thing in common with many people; they breeze through school and college, only to fall flat on their face in the "real" world, not just athletes but scholars in any given field. It's a shame to see this honestly but his love of playing the game and drive to continue football just seemed to die once he was signed...*sigh*

JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

I do feel bad that someone who had the world at his feet just let it all slip away. He was a talented player for that took it for granted and thought everything was gonna be handed to him. Its a prime example of a big fish in a small pond! When he was in college he was the biggest, fastest, best player out there. As it goes for so many big time players they never really have to work that hard to dominate in high school or in college. Then they get to the NFL were they find out that everybody is just as good as they are and now its gonna take some serious dedication to the sport to seperate themselves from the rest of the pack and they simply dont care enough to make the sacrifices! Its got to be a huge slap in the face when u realize one day that you only have your self to blame for your short comings. He's has been faced with all of this and has chosen to give up rather than step up. It truly is sad to see someone squander an opportunity of a lifetime that other players would have given anything to have.

JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

Its about time someone finally leaped over Ryan leaf as the NFL's biggest all time BUST.  I dont get do you have these athletes that can fool everyone become the #1 pick get millions and bust out faster than a fat chick sitting on a beachball.  Is it maturity, emotional dysfuntions, parenting, lack of discipline or maybe just plain stupidness.  This should be the #1 arguement for the NFL to reduce first year guarantee salaries and revert back to a performance based setup.   I didnt make millions out of college...I had an entry level job at a great company and know finally make over six figures.  I just dont get it but it sure is amusing to watch these players just fall flat on their face, i love it.

JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

Note to Cam Newton:  Was it cool for JaMarcus and Heath Schuler to sit out training camp while they made sure they got enuf money (taking advice from Agents)...  At the time they thought they were "too Cool" to settle and "screw the team", it's all about me...  IT DIDN'T WORK IN '95 OR '07...  GET TO CAMP ON TIME, wherever it is...  or regret it for the rest of your like..  The fans keep track of this stuff.. (I remember Schueler holding out like it was yesterday) never forgave him..  I wonder what the fans in Oakland think of JaMarcus holding out..

JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

People with $50 million dollars in the bank don't "sack groceries".

For all those people out there that say college athletes don't get paid, 2 words - JaMarcus *freakin* Russell!  He basically got paid $50M for 12 college games.

The next time the NFLPA objects to a rookie salary cap, 2 words - JaMarcus *freakin* Russell!  There MUST be a rookie cap.  No way Cam Newton should get more cash than Schaub, Flacco, Palmer, etc.

If Carolina is remotely serious about drafting Cam Newton, 2 words - JaMarcus *freakin* Russell!  Draft AJ Green this year along with a couple OL, trade DeAngelo Williams, suck again next year and then draft Andrew Luck next year.  In 2012 roll out with Luck, Stewart and Green, which is much better than Clausen (yes Clausen, pay attention - Cam Newton will BUST), Williams and Smith.

JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

JaMarcus Russell is the poster child for bad drafts.  He got paid and that was all he cared about.  He was not concerned with being an NFL quarterback.  All he was concerned with was the big contract.  He got that and now he is not worried about what comes next.  He might say that he wants to get back in the NFL and prove himself, but the proof is in his actions.  He is not sustaining his commitment to getting himself to a place that will provide him an opportuntiy to prove all of his critics wrong.

This has to be one of the biggest busts of all times. I know teams need QB's but scouts and coaches should take a hint on this and leave it be. My next vote for bust is Vonce Young. Young has never been an accurate passer and is a head acse to boot. Run 1st Qb's don't cut it anymore in the NFL. Even Vick is handing around in the pocket more these days. he talent on the Defensive side of the ball along with the speed has improved immensely. New era in the NFL.

I have to say JaMarcus is a bigger bust than Ryan Leaf.

JaMarcus Russell takes yet another step back

I guess this should not come as any surprise to anyone as JaMarcus always had bad footwork.  And to think some analysts thought that would be his biggest problem.  If only that were the case.
