Washington might want to take FSU's C. Ponder (US Presswire). Posted by Pete Prisco

There have been some reports that the Washington Redskins are looking to trade up to draft a quarterback.

I hear it's the exact opposite.

According to a league source, the Redskins are looking to trade down in the first round with the idea they will draft either Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder (pictured at right) or TCU quarterback Andy Dalton.

The Redskins, who pick 10th overall, would like to get a second-round pick from a team in exchange for moving back to their spot in the first round. They could then use their two second-round picks to bolster the defense.

For a team that doesn't have a third-round pick, this scenario makes a lot more sense than trying to trade up.

The X-factor here would be if Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert were to fall to them at the 10th spot. The Redskins would likely take him there, rather than trading back.

One team that is said to be eyeing the 10th spot is the New England Patriots, who have two first-round picks and two second-round picks. The Patriots might have their eye on an edge rusher -- like Ryan Kerrigan of Purdue -- or a receiver like Julio Jones of Alabama.

No matter if they trade down or not, the Redskins have to get a quarterback in this draft. Donovan McNabb is on his way out and Rex Grossman isn't the answer and he's a free agent.

The only quarterback on the roster is John Beck. Not a chance he's the opening-day starter, which is why a trade back in th first round makes sense.

Here's hoping that the Skins keep thier pick and take Gabbert if available. If he is not available then the trade down with N. E. could be a good possibility.   With the departure of moss and the fact that Wes Welker will soon be 30, the pats moving up to pick up a receiver early in the draft makes a great deal of sense.  Though I think that the need for them really lies on the defensive side of the ball.  Kerrigan may very well be available to them at 17 anyway, so if they are looking d-line, I think that Aldon Smith makes more sense.

Grossman is exactly what he has shown he is.  He's inconsistent, inaccurate, and turnover prone and not exactly young either, he will be 31 entering this season...The skins are rebuilding, Grossman is not what they need

Yeah, the kid got a raw deal... getting booed at training camp on top of everything else.  I wanted to see him succeed, but eventually faced the fact that his deficiencies (mostly height, feet and pocket presence) outweighed the positives.  I would have loved to have had him as Cutler's backup, but he needed to get out of Chicago.

More predictable media hatred for Rex Grossman - what a surprise!  Grossman's still pretty young and at the age a lot of qb's seem to hit their peak.  For the first time in his career he'll be running the same offense on the same team for the same coach as the year before.  I the Redskins had anything at wr, he could put up huge numbers in 2011.

We need help all over, but I'm in favor of them trading back and picking up multiple picks because we need as many as we can get. This will be very interesting to see what coach Shanahan and GM Bruce Allen will come up with during the draft.
