Note: Mallett's agents and the Panthers organization have both issued statements claiming the quarterback was genuinely sick on the morning of April 9. You can read those statements here.

----------

If the sources talking to Brad Briggs of the National Football Post are correct, Ryan Mallett’s draft stock could soon take a serious hit. Briggs says the Arkansas quarterback skipped a pre-draft meeting with the Panthers earR. Mallett (US Presswire)lier this month after a night out on the town in Charlotte.

Mallett reportedly arrived in town April 8 and met team officials for a dinner that night. There were supposed to be meetings the next day at Bank of America Stadium but they were cancelled after Mallett called the team saying he was sick. The problem? Sources say Mallett was seen out on the town following the late dinner.

Earlier this week there were reports that Mallett had admitted to teams that he has used drugs in the past. Questions about rumored failed drug tests and character concerns have dogged the talented pocket passer throughout the 2011 draft process.

UPDATE 12:40 p.m. EST:
Briggs isn't the only one reporting this. Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer says league sources tell him Mallett skipped a meeting with GM Marty Hurney.

UPDATE 2:20 p.m. EST:
Mallett’s agent, J.R. Carroll has responded. “I’ll tell you this — Ryan was in his hotel room by about 10 o’clock,” Carroll told ESPN’s Adam Schefter, via Pro Football Talk.

“I’m pretty sure Ryan was really, really sick. He told me he was sick the night before. And I know Ryan wasn’t out late night. I know that for sure. He’s not an idiot.”

Carroll says Mallett had dinner with Julio Jones the night of April 8 but left early because he did not feel well. He also says Mallett met with Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski the next morning but cancelled the rest of the day’s meetings due to sickness.

Report: Mallett spurns Panthers after night out

I hate these kinds of headlines...  First, he didn't spurn them he called them and told them he couldn't make it.  I would agree you'd have to be deasthly ill to blow off such a meeting but that brings me to point two.  How do we know he wasn't sick?  I've been fine the night before and woke up sick as hell.  In referencing BB he did draft A. Hernandez after failed drug tests and that has worked out pretty well getting him in RD 4 and for a discount price.  Pats are looking for a quarterback they can develop to the same tune the Pack did with Rodgers.  Patriots are all about value if not cheap, if this guy slips don't be surprised for Bill to grab this guy at middle round value.

Report: Mallett spurns Panthers after night out

I guarantee this guy will be a bust. I will be watching the draft waiting to see which team becomes the sucker and takes Mallett. He will be a headcase from day 1 and will cause nothing but problems for whichever team drafts him. If you get a chance, check out some interview video on this clown and tell me if you would want him to be the leader and signal caller for your team. Maybe the Raiders?? I dont know, maybe a prison team.
Funny to see Belichek bringing this guy in for interviews, because there is no way he would take this guy. He is just propping up his stock to fool other teams into taking Mallett before the Pats pick. Good move Bill! He knows a sucker team will fall for his ploy.

Mallett will be a bust!!!!

Report: Mallett spurns Panthers after night out

It's really a shame for Mallett that these off-the-field questions linger in the era of High and Mighty Dictator Goodell. He has everything else that one could want in a pro QB: a heck of an arm and a reasonably high football IQ. I watched that whole Camp Gruden thing with him (and the one with Cam Newton), and he looked very good. If Tagliabue were still commissioner, I'd draft him in a heartbeat. With Goodell, you never know if he'll be fully available.

Of course, a team could hire a private detective to tail him everywhere, but that's another story...

Really hope for his sake this is all rumors. Reporters will take the littlest thing and blow it out of proportion.
