Toomer compares Goodell to the Nazis

Sometimes the hyperbole about the players or the owners or Roger Goodell goes just a little too far.

And solidifying that point for us is former Giants WR Amani Toomer, who compared Goodell to the Gestapo.

“I think the way Mr. Goodell has handled this, the way he’s kind of using his power, is like the kind of a Gestapo-type situation, controlling the players, not letting the judicial system do its work,” Toomer said Wednesday (via Pro Football Talk) . “It rubs a lot of players the wrong way, and that’s why you see a lot of players now lashing out at Mr. Goodell.”

Is it a ridiculous comparison? Yes. Does Toomer need to apologize for saying something to stupid and offensive? Yes. Will these comparisons to Nazis ever end? Hopefully.

You may have a college degree but you certainly know nothing about our judicial system. OJ was found guilty in the civil trial (and not in the criminal trial) because civil trials use a different burden of proof than criminal trials. In a criminal trial, a defendant must be found guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt." In a civil trial, the burden is lessened to a "preponderance of evidence." The reasoning for this difference is simple - if the State is going to take away your freedom, then there must be overwhlming evidence to do so. The same does not apply to a civil trial, where a person's freedom is not at stake.

And who cares that your great, great, great grandfather was a slave? It is that victim mentality that continues to keep the black man down. Nor should I (as a white man) be held accountable for something that happened that long ago. What Toomer said is moronic and I seriously doubt that either him nor you have any clue what the Gestapo actually was. Get a clue and stop being a victim.

El Casey - I can appreciate a person having an open mind and being able to look at a situation from a different perspective. One cannot draw a conclusion and express it in the most extreme sense. Try to understand what a person is expressing. We can all dig up and sling a little mud in every direction;however, what would that prove to advance a clear and honest understanding of each other. I encourage reason without hate and resentment through emotional outburst. Any response, that relates to the most  savage time in any culture, draws the ire of someone of that culture and they feel it is an inappropriate comparison. No one holds a patent on such an issue.

Have we gotten off course here? The real issue is we have a group of people that are rediculously over paid for playing a game ! What is this with all the slavery reference? I really don't care about a person's race, religion, etc. - I was raised that you treat others as you want to be treated. Bottom line - with all the people in this country out of work and trying to figure out how to feed and house their families this whole CBA issue is rediculous.

I loved Amani catching clutch passes for us. However, one has to question opinions from someone who has run so many crossing patterns in the NFL.

While comments containing a reference to "the Jew community" just sound a bit off to me, I generally agree with the previous post and I don't think Amani Toomer owes anyone an apology.  What Mr. Katzowitz is missing, I think, is that Hitler and the Nazi era have two entirely different identities within our society: an historical one and a cultural one.  Toomer's analogy, and indeed I think the vast majority of Nazi analagies that we tend to draw, is strictly related to the second one.  American popular culture (and perhaps other that of other nations as well) has always liked its good to be very good and its evil to be rotten.  You could always tell the white hats from the black hats in our westerns, probably more a function of black and white film-making than of any manifestation of all present underlying racism in America.  There is a tendency in the last few decades, some would say a maturing one, to say that nothing is pure in people, neither the good nor the bad.  Good guys kill disarmed adversaries; bad guys have a soft spot for some women and kids, etc.  The value of the Nazis as a cultural phenomenon is that in our minds they and all the apparatuses they spawned (the gestapo et. al.) are pure, unadulturated evil.  That, I think, is exactly the motivation for Toomer's choice of imagery and I think it is completely appropriate.  When the first President Bush likened Sadam to Hitler, he was straddling the line a little too close for comfort but I think he, too, was maligned inappropriately.  If someone suggests that the Commissioner and his agents are kicking in doors in the middle of the night, hauling people off to torture and kill them, and exercising the absolute power of a police state, that is offensive and absurd.  Toomer wasn't suggesting anything of the sort.  His analogy taps into our shared perception of absolute evil.  I may not see the League and the owners in quite that light, but I don't challenge his right to use the images of our common culture to get me to go there.

This may be true, but when you know how it feels to be a black man in this so called equal right world, then you can say what you want. Were your ancestors slaves? We as black men are still looked down upon. As hard as most of us try to use oue college degree's to make it and also we take care of our family, this racist mess still finds us. I know most of the white wil say "I had nothing to do with what my ancetors did" well in the court of law OJ Simpsom was found innocent in the criminal case but was found guilty in his civil case. The same applies to you! You may not be slave masters but you are still held accountable!
