Hall of Fame running back Joe "The Jet" Perry, who played 16 years in the NFL, died on Monday morning at the age of 84.

Perry, who played 14 of his 16 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, became the first player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons and, when he retired, was the NFL's all-time leading rusher.

A member of the All-Decade team for the 1950's Perry was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969.

"All of us here at the Pro Football Hall of Fame are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the great Joe Perry," commented Pro Football Hall of Fame President/Executive Director Steve Perry. "Joe was not only a key figure in the history of professional football, but he was a great friend to us here at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was a frequent visitor to Canton for our annual Enshrinement ceremony as well as many other Pro Football Hall of Fame events. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife Donna and the entire Perry family."

Perry tallied 9,723 rushing yards in his career, made three Pro Bowls and led the 49ers in rushing for seven consecutive seasons.

If he played 16 years and stuff he was a running back then he had to be in his mid to late 30's when he retired.  That in it self is pretty amazing.   Now running back can be on the downside by the time they reach 30.  I know the players are bigger and stronger, etc, etc but how many running backs are still productive in there late 30's.  The only one I can think of is Marcus Allen and Bettis, one is in the Hall and the other probably will be.  Playing 16 years in the NFL at anytime is a pretty big accomplishment.  The guy had to be a heck of an athelete.

I hate the 49'ers, but a show of respect...

RiP Joe Perry, I'll pray for your family and I'm sorry for their loss.

Joe Perry played his first game for the AAC 49ers in 1948. He was an 8-year pro by the time you saw him.

Reading this story is bitter sweet for me and took me back to 1957. I was 11 years of age and my first football game at Kezar Stadium. I belive it was Joe Perry first game and my father said to me he is going to be a great player and he was. It was a time in my life that was new and exciteing. Thank you Joe for the great memorys, and god bless you. By the way if nobody has been to Golden State Park where Kezar was located, Do so it a great place and a great time.

As one of the three teams from the AAFC that merged with the NFL the 49ers were always just a couple of games away from a title shot during the 1950’s thanks to the play of Joe Perry and YA Tittle. Always in the hunt and always competitive the 49ers were one of the great teams that made the 50’s a decade to remember.

Joe Perry was a great football player and a great man.

May he be resting in peace.
