Newton Posted by Josh Katzowitz

I did a radio show in Edmonton tonight, and the hosts asked me if I thought Cam Newton was a safe bet to go No. 1 to the Panthers.

I said that even though we hear different scenarios all the time (Carolina could trade out of the top spot, the Panthers could take somebody else or they could grab Newton, and all have valid points why they might be true), I told the hosts that I figured it was a pretty good bet Newton would hear his name called first.

Former Oilers QB Warren Moon – and one of Newton’s advisors – agrees with that assessment.

He told 620 KTAR in Arizona today (via Pro Football Talk) that he’s 90 percent sure Carolina will take Newton.

And not even Newton knows for sure. After all, with the lockout dragging on, it’s not like the two sides could begin negotiating with each other for the top spot.

Moon said the Panthers are playing their pick “close to the vest.”

Which makes pretty good fodder to talk – and write blog posts – about. And luckily, we’ll have our answer in less than 24 hours.

Where did the comparison of Cam Newton to JaWalrus Russell come from Lanceit44? I’m guessing from your bigoted mind since no one else has raised the issue on this board. And what does Tim Tebow have to do with anything?

First of all, I am well aware of the past history of prejudice and racism in American history as well as sport. But this is the 21st century. There is not an NFL GM today that wouldn’t draft a player, regardless of color, if they thought that player could help his team win. Personally, I could care less if a player is purple, green, orange or blue as long as they can play.

Ryan Leaf was a white quarterback and he sucked. JaWalrus was a black quarterback and he sucked. In other words, regardless of color, they both sucked!

It’s time for people to stop using color as a convenience when then they perceive things as not going their way.

In the case of Warren Moon - he is an advisor to Cam Newton. About a month ago, Moon overreacted and played the race card (not the first time) when a story appeared that Newton’s ranking in the NFL draft was dropping because of the way Newton carried himself in public. Fair or unfair, It was one reporter’s opinion. It was not a majority opinion or the collective evaluation of NFL GM’s! But Moon did not hesitate to raise the race card and said that Newton was being maligned only because he was a charismatic black athlete playing a high profile position.

We’ve all had our moments. Did Warren ever stop to think that maybe Cam was acting like a dick at the time of the article? It’s been known to happen

Actually World whether he goes first or not, its going to be a Black player selected #1....  And who do think knows more about racism in the NFL? You?? Or Warren Moon?? I would have to select Mr Moon...  I find it funny, that someone from the outside finds it so hard to beleive that racism exists in the NFL... Its exists in the everyday world, so why wouldn't it exist in the NFL?? I also think its hilarious that anytime white people don't agree with a minority's feelings on racism, they are "pulling the race card".... LOL

Why is that Cam is constantly compared to JaMarcuss Russell?? Otherthan them being black and breathing oxygen, thats the only thing they have in common... JR was an above average QB(and fat) at LSU at BEST, but since he threw the ball 80 yds Al Davis took him #1... He was not a #1 draft pick at all...  Cam is far from Peyton Manning polished coming into the NFL, but I think he has the potential to be great... He has won at JC level and at Auburn, and I think he will continue to win(in time)... Hell if Tebow can go in the 1st round, Cam can go #1...

I saw a poll of who Carolina would take, and AJ Green is not on there. That is who I think they will take. I guess it was downplayed that Steve Smith cleaned out his locker and her personals and vowed not to return huh? Well whoever is playing QB will have no weapons. They use a couple of late round picks as their primary receivers, no steve smith, and Deangelo Williams is not expected back.

Tha plan should be to take AJ Green and give Claussen another chance. If it works out, then perfect. If not, they'll likely have the top pick in the draft again to go after Andrew Luck. With 4 QBs going in the first round this year, not everyone is going to be looking for one. The only team they'd have to worry about is Buffalo, who may actually surprised people with Fitzpatrick next season.

Only thing is Green isn't a can't miss. Julio smashed him at the combine, but AJ knows how to play receiver.

I hope Newton is the first player to go. Otherwise there's a chance that a white player could be taken before him and that means having to listen to Moon play the race card until the cows come home.

Joe Flacco is certainly not an elite QB, Matt Ryan is good but is overhyped. Bradford is the truth. Stafford will prove to be a franchise too. Also Like Freeman upside. Gabbert & Locker will have quality careers but nothing special. Everyone is looking for the home run. What do most home run hitters do when they're not hitting ? the strike out.
