UPDATED 1:40 P.M. ET: Here's Ward's reaction in a text message to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

"There's not a story. It was a misunderstanding and the police apologized to me. I didn't get arrested. I don't have a reaction to a non story."

----------

When Los Angeles police ran the license plate of a car in which Steelers WR Hines Ward happened to be riding about 2 a.m. this morning, the results of the scan forced officers to stop the vehicle and hold Ward and the driver at gunpoint.

Ward This, according to TMZ, which writes that Ward was riding in the car that had been reported stolen. The only problem: the female driving the car was the one who actually reported it stolen (she, um, forgot to tell police that she actually recovered her Honda Civic).

Once police – who handcuffed Ward but didn't officially arrest him – verified her story, they let the two of them go merrily on their way.

This line in the article made me laugh, though. “Law enforcement sources tell us Hines was VERY cooperative and understanding about the situation.” With a gun pointed to my head, I imagine I would have the exact same attitude as Ward.

You would think so, wouldn't you? '  "This line in the article made me laugh, though. “Law enforcement sources tell us Hines was VERY cooperative and understanding about the situation.” With a gun pointed to my head, I imagine I would have the exact same attitude as Ward. ' Thing is, I've seen enough "street theater" to know better. Guys turning half way around, hands cuffed or not, arguing with cops, trying to litigate their cases right there in the neighborhood. Crowds gathering, the occasional piece of flying detritus, screaming women, cussing men, bedlam. If you want to know just why cops sometime overreact, then know that what I describe is distressingly common behavior in some communities. (The biggest difference between certain groups and others in their relations with the police is that only one is nearly universally ready to suffer the consequences of their further misbehavior. Too often, the other suffers from the delusion that they can not only litigate things on-the-spot, but that they can even LEGISLATE things to conform to their notions of how things SHOULD be in the legal system. (Oh, I've seen the not-other guys try to weasel out of their just desserts, but they at least KNOW that they're doing so and are sometimes even a bit sheepish about it. Not so the other guys; mostly, they're convinced of their righteousness, unto their dying breath. And all of their friends and relatives with them, to all appearances.)

Damn Ward, you can't get your lady a nicer car than a Civic, I mean I know there is a lockout and we're in a recession but you couldn't even upgrade her to the Honda Accord.

1. I don't think Hines is married. 2. You could have lost your car, reported it stolen, then find your car, thats the most logical explanation for this.  Unless Hines in all his awesomness help the young lady fight off the bad guys that stole the car.  Which may work for action movies but not usually in real life.3. How does owning a honda civic makes you ghetto?  Ignorant comment.  My moms owns one and well she lives no where near a ghetto.
Its a non story but thats how they get us - with the title.
