Toronto wants an NFL team, thinks it could happen

Toronto would have to revamp Rogers Centre or build a new stadium entirely in order to attract the NFL (US Presswire). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Apparently, Toronto feels like it has a pretty good shot of landing an NFL team at some point in the future.* But I’m thinking the city will have to wait just a little while longer.

*Personally, I think that’d be great if the NFL came to Toronto full-time. Toronto is a great city with fantastic restaurants, friendly people with awesome accents, and a strong public transportation system.

“They have to take care of the problem in Los Angeles first,” Toronto councillor Doug Ford told The Score. “Two teams are kind of in play here: Jacksonville’s number one; New Orleans is the other. So there’s two teams. Once they take care of Los Angeles, we’re going to fly over to New York, set up a meeting with [NFL commissioner Roger] Goodell and give him our pitch.”

One problem with Ford’s theory is that there’s little chance the NFL would present a franchise to Toronto if the city doesn’t improve its current facilities (or just build a new one). Rogers Centre – where the Bills play once a season – is not exactly a state-of-the-art, gleaming-new stadium.

But Ford has talked about the possibility of building a new waterfront stadium or providing more seats for the current facility (to do that, apparently the hotel inside could be yanked out or the stadium floor could actually be dropped deeper into the earth in order to create more seats, the latter of which would make Jules Verne a proud man).

But to compare this potential new franchise with playing host to Buffalo’s franchise once a year is not the right association to make, Ford said.

“If we had our own team, we’d treat it like it’s our own and build up a fan base,” he said. “They want to expand internationally. But what better expansion than down the street to Toronto? They can’t keep ignoring a market this size.”

Funny, the NFL has basically ignored Los Angeles the past 16 years. And if Ford believes the NFL will “take care of the problem” in L.A. first, he might have a long wait in front of him.

Still, he gets to live in Toronto, which is pretty cool, eh?

Toronto wants an NFL team, thinks it could happen

American non-belivers can screw off!  We love the NFL here in Canada as much as anyone of you.  Football has become a serious sport here in Canada youth programs are growing stronger every year.  My friends and I play pick up football every Sunday at 11:30 and have been for 12 years and counting. When I say every sunday I mean it!  From snow storms to heat waves.  We have 3 friends now that are from the U.S. that play with us and all 3 of them say "Wow I didn't realize how passionate you guys are about football up here!"  We love your sport and want to be involved.  Stop making football the best sport in America and start making it the best sport in the world!

All you Americans are just afraid of the championship coming north of the border.Ha Ha!Like when the Jays won back to back titles.Since then baseball exists as a non sport. Sports have salary caps, baseball does not have one there for it is not a sport. In a division with the Yankees and Red Soxs where you play the teams in your division the most it's a biding war.Put the Jays in a any other division and their contenders year after year. Have a salary cap of 120million and does anyone believe the Yankees and Soxs would be power houses? Where not going to support David vs Goliath year after year, it's like banging your head against the wall.
Now the nfl has a cap, we will compete and win several super bowls.Unlike over paid cry babies Chris Bosh and Vince Carter, football players are tough and have charecter and honour and loyalty, not like a bunch of greedy punks that grew up in the hood.I wonder what their majors where under water basket weaving or what.Football players are highly educated.
The Bills will be come TORONTOs team, personally I hope they retain the rights to the name Bills. I prefer the TORONTO TONTOS, to go along with the Chiefs and the Skins.Buffalo is the armpitt of the nation, which used to be Clevland (the mistake by the lake), but that city is new and vital again. Good for them my dad was a huge Browns fan. Nobody believes Buffalo will do an about face like what happened in Clevland and if it's possible it will be decades.THE LEAGUE won't wait.Snyder, Jones, Allen, the big boys want a team here.
We all knew nothing was going to happen, with a strike looming, next springs meetings LA and TO will be the priority.
All this coming from a distant relative of the greatest player ever BRONKO NAGURSKI just ask JOHN MADDEN.
