R. Mendenhall (US Presswire)Posted by Will Brinson

In case you hadn't heard, Steelers' RB Rashard Mendenhall did some tweeting recently about Osama Bin Laden. It did NOT go over well with the general public. And it apparently didn't go over well with athletic wear company Champion, who fired Mendenhall on Thursday.

Mendenhall inked a post on his site attempting to explain his Twitter burst, but clearly that wasn't enough, as the company, who's paid Mendenhall to endorse their products, decided that Mendenhall's tweets were "inconsistent with the values of the Champion brand." So, they fired him.

"In light of these comments, Champion was obliged to conduct a business assessment to determine whether Mr. Mendenhall could continue to effectively communicate on behalf of and represent Champion with consumers," Champion spokesman told told Michael McCarthy of USA Today"While we respect Mr. Mendenhall's right to express sincere thoughts regarding potentially controversial topics, we no longer believe that Mr. Mendenhall can appropriately represent Champion and we have notified Mr. Mendenhall that we are ending our business relationship."

It's not surprising at all to see Champion -- whose logo is colored red, white and blue, by the way -- pull this move from a public relations standpoint, as Mendenhall's comments alienated many a fan. But it is interesting from the perspective of how a brand, an endorser and a demographic interact.

For instance, here's an example of something similar from another form of popular culture: the Dixie Chicks, once upon an election or two ago, decided to speak out against George W. Bush. Because they are a country music band who caters to a particular, shall we say "more American" demographic, overcoming that sort of statement in public was nearly impossible. (Conversely, Green Day, a rock band whose listeners tend to be more liberal, can write an entire song ripping Bush, and the only consequence is that they sell more records.)

I'm not saying that Champion is a country band, but I do think that it's substantially more difficult for Champion to overcome a slew of average, everyday Americans refusing to buy their brand because they endorse Mendenhall.

And, of course, there's the fact that Mendenhall isn't exactly Tiger Woods, whose value as an endorser holds greater weight.

Look, Mendenhall didn't do anything wrong, he just did something stupid. Athletes -- and everyone -- today simply have to understand that using Twitter is just like being a at a press conference. While Twitter and Facebook and all forms of social media are a fascinating and fun way for athletes to communicate with fans and media alike, it's also a part of an individual's brand.

And as we've seen countless times, you don't need to break any laws to ruin your image in this country.

They collapse exactly like that. Especially when a plane hits them. Which is why they collapsed like that after the planes hit them

Says you. I'll believe the demolition experts I've spoken with. All have said, it was a controlled demolition. Buildings don't just collapse like that because they get hit by a plane and a fire is started. That's why we have controlled demolition crews.

Nobody ever said it did

I've got an experiment for you. Try to have something collapse onto itself 3 times when the structure has varying resistence points. Try it. Once is a fluke. 3 times is a joke that anyone believe that crap.

Making it the first building in the history of the planet to fall down without the aid of a plane? Oh, and it didn't "collapse into itself". It collapsed while leaning to the south, which is why it damage other buildings on the way down and formed a 12-story mess speading outward 150 meters

No, but people like you say, well they collapsed like that because a friggin' plane hit them. Building 7 never had a plane hit it. Building 7 must have been the worst built building in the world to collapse the way it did from having some fires and some debris hit it. And take a look at the video. If you don't think the building collapsed in to itself you really need to having a great time in the lake front property in Dallas I have.

No, refusing to capitalize "American" is un-American

And here it is ladies and gentlemen. The calling card of someone with nothing to say. Fixing grammar on a sports message board. Good for you!! It makes your argument hold so much more water.... oh wait, it actually makes it look like you're reaching for straws all over the place as it is here:

You forgot the hyphen this time. Anyway, a lot of people did ask, and he even made jokes about it. By the end of his administration, we all knew pretty much what sort of person he was.
Apparently, you don't pay much attention to the world around you. Otherwise, you might have noticed all kinds of people asking questions about all kinds of things. Of course, I tease. We all know you did notice. The problem is, when the thousands of experts all arrived at the same conclusions regarding the September 11, 2001 attacks, you decided that a handful of dudes who looked at YouTube videos for three days on thier computers knew more. Not everyone else's fault you decided to slap on the blinders

I didn't say people didn't ask. I said, it was un-American (is that better for you) to ask questions. People that did ask questions were made to feel the same way as the people that ask legit questions about this topic we're on. Why has GWB not been arrested or war crimes? He is in FACT a war criminal.

Your thousand experts all are connected to the government. What about the thousands of experts that dispute those findings. But, of course, you don't care about those guys. They are un-Ameican. Listen to everything your government tells you and everything will be ok. They wouldn't lie to us.

And let not forget your great point here:

That's okay. We don't expect you to spell "board" correctly, having already read your badly spelled, randomly punctuated love letter to yourself in the form of imagined intellectual superiority and willfully ignorant specualtion

Wow, picking on the spelling of an obvously mistyped word. That adds so much credibility to your arguments. Deflection is the highest form of flattery on these boards.

BTW, it's not ignorant to suggest 2 buildings of 110 storeys falling in to themselves was not cause by a plane crash. It's ignorant to think 3 buildings could collapse that way without help. But, you would actually have to do some research in to building demolitionto know this. Since the American goverment hasn't delivered that book to your house yet I guess you haven't read up on it.

You must be educated by UNION teachers as well

You need to use spell check as well as let someone read your post. It is idiotic and complete NONSENSE. Champion could not have fired this idiot any faster than it did. Mendenhall is brain dead and should be waived by the Steelers. I guess you fall in the Charlie Sheen camp that 9/11 was a Bush conspiracy and/or alien spaceships attacked the Twin Towers.

Champion fires Rashard Mendenhall as endorser

I disagree with this action.  Champion obviously has the right to pay who ever they like and they have a target audience but I think Rashard has some valid and worth while arguments.  Anyway it goes, he still has the right to voice his opinion, here he unfortunately is suffering the consquences because no body of power wants to empower the outspoken.  They would rather keep their ducks in a line and being obedient to the national brain control they are doing.  If someone steps out, especially from within their organization, they must be crushed.  Anyway, the NFL is so powerful that they have begun using fear to boost their power, fear that there won't be a next season, there won't be a new madden, there won't be a super bowl.  The NFL supports Americas fear-mongering, because it helps keep the small people down, letting the rich get richer.  This lock out will end a moment before everyone gives up on the NFL and at that moment they will have the biggest following they have ever had.

Anyway, tangenting. I am so happy that Mendenhall spoke up about what he beleives in, even though he wasn't as direct as he could have been.  I am not going to buy Champion because of their action, but then again, I was never their consumer anyway.  I guess I come out unharmed, Mendenhall loses a bit of cash but really, would you rather put your foot in your mouth and make a few extra bucks or speak up and feel proud about getting it off of your chest?

Now it's time for the Steelers and the NFL to get rid of this Bum....let him get a real job and see what he thinks of his slavery comments,I think he would find how good and lucky he was to be a "slave" of the NFL.Maybe after he gets booted from the NFL we can take him to the Mid East and drop him off and can hang out with Terrorists and see hoe much he likes those people then.....what a loser.
