Would the owners really shut down the NFL?

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk came up with an interesting – and let’s face it, a scary-as-hell – scenario today.

Citing “initial rumblings”, Florio writes that if the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals doesn’t overturn Judge Susan Nelson’s ruling that the lockout be lifted, it’s possible the owners will shut down the league altogether until the players accept a new labor deal.

Writes Florio, “The thinking is that, if the owners cease all operations, the NFL would not be violating the court order because there would be no lockout at that point.  Instead, the league essentially would be going out of business – something for which the NFL repeatedly chided the union in the weeks and months preceding decertification of the NFLPA.”

In two words, “Holy crap!” In four more words, “That would be bad.”

So, would the owners cut off their noses (shut down the league) in order to spite their faces (the players)? Are they even allowed to do that? And how would the fans respond to something that drastic?

In my opinion, talking to fans and sifting through blog comments, it seems clear that about half of football fans side with the owners in this labor dispute. I always wonder if that’s because some of those people think the players are the ones who are striking (as opposed to the owners locking them out). And now, I wonder if the fans who support the owners during this lockout would continue to do so if those owners completely blow up the NFL.

Would the owners really shut down the NFL?

"I DONT KNOW ALL THE LEGAL WRANGLINGS, BUT THE OWNERS OWN THE STADIUMS, AND THE TV CONTRACTS, AND ALL CLOTHING, ETC.

THEY CAN EASILY JUST CLOSE UP THE STADIUMS AND SAY EITHER TAKE OUR OFFER OR WE'LL WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR AND SEE IF YOU'RE READY.  THE PLAYERS CAN SUE ALL THEY WANT, IT WON'T MATTER.  THE PLAYERS ARE PAID EMPLOYEES...."
Basically, not only do you not know "all the legal wranglings", but are pretty much clueless about the rest as well.
The owners do not own the stadiums, with a very few exceptions.
The players are not in the same position as other employees are, and yes, they can (and did) sue. Perhaps you missed the news on that one while pontificating on issues you plainly know nothing about...

Would the owners really shut down the NFL?

The judge only said that they violated the contract. Since they did sign to only negotiate in a "good faith" effort with the TV deals. They did not do that since they are guaranteed $ without games being played this year. get the facts. 4 months of the year is all you see. try 9 months of constant physical and mental challenges. Go do the hardest workout you can, and then test your brain. That's what these athletes do on a regular basis to be the best they can. Some are more gifted and don't work hard and then drop out of the league, that's the owner's fault for drafting someone who sucks(Jamarcus Russell)

Would the owners really shut down the NFL?

Have you ever played sports? I can't argue that people like me would love to play football and make the league minimum. But, people also would not pay to see me play. That's what we are dealing with here. ELITE athletes, some of the best in the world. If the some of the NFL owners want to pay athletes record salaries every year(Jerry Jones, Dan Schneider) then the other owners need to take that up with the other owners. The owners are asking for extra $ out of the agreement they made with the UNION, which is all the players, not individual employees. I guess that is what the people who side with the owners can't comprehend, the owners agreed to something in 2006 and then decided it wasn't good enough and decided to sign a TV contract with plans to lock the players out. Looks like the owners just made a business mistake and can't handle the "business" side of things. Now they are going overboard trying to correct it. If they owners shut down the NFL, there will be football in 2012 and it would be awesome to not have any of these whining owners in the business, instead, the real owners that want to put a quality product on the field would step up( Mark Cuban, Jerry Jones) in the NFL or a new football league, and there would be football again. Players will get paid b/c someone will pay them millions to make them millions. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE

Would the owners really shut down the NFL?

I read so many intelligent, well thought out posts before I came across this one filled with misspellings and run on sentences. How can you start your post off with "You're an idiot" and then follow it with that garbage?

1. Which players support their "posse"?....where did you find these statistics?

2. NFL players only work 4 months out of the year?....Last I checked training camp usually starts in July and the Super Bowl is in February. I'm also guessing that NFL players don't work out during the off season and just show up to training camp ready to play.

3. People don't want to pay to see you at work or police, firefighters or miners for that matter. Get a skill set that people want to pay to see or stop b**chin.
