Skins, Steelers had draft deal, but guy was gone

UPDATE (Monday, 11:00 AM): So, this is weird: the Redskins are saying now that Dan Snyder never appeared on Sirius. Which makes Wexell's tweet really odd. Read the anatomy of a rumor post right here.

The 2011 NFL Draft has come and gone, but here's an interesting little nugget about something that could have happened, involving a Redskins-Steelers trade for the No. 16 overall pick.

Per Jim Wexell of Steel City Insider, Dan Snyder, appearing on Sirius Radio this past week, said that Washington and Pittsburgh had a deal in place for the No. 16 overall pick, but "the player was gone."

As you probably recall, the Redskins traded down from 10th to 16th via a deal with Jacksonville where the Jaguars picked up Blaine Gabbert.

The logical guess is that the Steelers wanted Mike Pouncey, brother of their center, Maurkice Pouncey. Can we be sure though?

Well, not positive, but pretty close. Hopping in the not-so-way-back machine and taking a look at our Draft Tracker, we can pretty much reach that conclusion.

We have to make the assumption that the player in question was taken in between the 11th and 15th picks, as Washington had access to both the 10th and 16th picks and Pittsburgh didn't make a move.

Scratching the one quarterback taken in that range, Gabbert and Christian Ponder, off the list isn't a reach, considering that the Steelers still have Ben Roethlisberger.

J.J. Watt and Robert Quinn were both strong picks, but it seems unlikely that Pittsburgh would trade valuable assets for a defensive end in a year when there was depth at the position. Additionally, Cameron Heyward -- the guy they got -- fits their scheme nicely.

Nick Fairley could have been under consideration, as he would have represented outstanding value, but, I'm not so sure that what he does best would necessarily equate to making him the long-term answer at DT for Pittsburgh, assuming they don't make a scheme shift once (if??) Dick LeBeau retires.

And then there's this: many people thought the Dolphins would take Alabama running back Mark Ingram, but went with Pouncey right before the 'Skins 16th pick instead. So it seemed like Pouncey might be there at 16; clearly the Steelers are fans of that family, and wouldn't need to play him at center, as many teams felt they might.

And with their second-round pick, the Steelers nabbed Pouncey's linemate at Florida, Marcus Gilbert. That's not to say they loved the other Pouncey just because he's related to one of their players, or because he's from the same school.

And it's tough to guarantee that's what they were hoping for, but it sure does seem like a strong possibility.

Rockomancr, what position do you play or coach? You don't you say? So there is no "we," and there is no "our." you are just a fan and have nothing to do with what the Steelers do or don't do. Steeler fans need to draft a football IQ.

How soon we forget the Steelers were in the Super Bowl. This team is built to win every year and I see no exceptions this year. They are a strong team and just got stronger in the draft. I think their secondary is a little weak, but getting rid of Hood would be a mistake without replacing him with a strong player to take his spot. The Steelers will be fine a go onto the Playoffs like they always do.

Giblert will not start at T this season, are you crazy. When do we every bring in a rookie to start at T for our team. If our line stays healthy I honesty believe we have a top 5 O-line. Colon is a beast RT, and Starks is very underated and has the task of guessing where Big-Ben will move to. No need to talk about Pouncey, and Kemo is one of the best pullers in the game. The line is stud if healthy, but when our best 3 are injured for a SB... it makes it tough.

   Raymatsu,
Not one of your finer comments. Aaron Smith is 35 years old and only played 11 games the past two seasons. He is still a great player when healthy, but he is at the very end of his career. 2011-2012 is Smith's contract year, and there is no way we sign him to anything substantial, if at all. Keisel is 32, and he is under contract through the 2013-2014 season.

2011-2012 = Smith, Kiesel (Ziggy and Cam backup)
2012-2013 = Ziggy, Kiesel (Cam back up)
2013-2014 = Ziggy, Kiesel (or Ziggy, Cam.. depends on whether Cam steps up and Kiesel slows down)

Great situation to groom 2 DEs in our system. The position is one of the most important on our team. They make our OLBs and Troy's job much easier, and allow them to make plays because they contain and stop the run better then just about anyone.

Ziggy's days are numbered?  What the hell are you talking about/  Hood is going into his 3rd year and will be it Pittsburgh for quite awhile.  The Steelers play 2 ends in the 3-4 and Smith is getting old and brittle.  You need to have depth and Keisel is not exactly a spring chicken.  The 3rd round corner, Curtis Brown will be better than 3/4 of the CB's taken ahead of him.  If anything Smith should restructure his deal once the labor deal is struck.  He could help free up more cap room to re-sign Ike and even possibly go after another corner.

The Steelers went to the super bowl with a make shift last year-we should have the 2 guys back this year so we should be fine but I agree with CB post. we need a shut down corner now! Drafting Heyward probably means Ziggy days are numbered.

this is interesting to see considering the steelers have only traded up in the draft like what 4 times?  Having said that, I probably would have been happier with a draft that included Mike Pouncey.  Heyward is a great player, but it is not really our top need at the moment, like offensive line or CB.  Wish this would have gone down, those two could have anchored our line for a decade+

I wonder what the Steelers were offering in return for it.

I'm sure it was just picks being swapped.

Steelers had a great draft regardless.
