Ike Taylor to test the free agent market

I. Taylor
Nnamdi Asomugha is the headline-grabbing cornerback available on this year’s free agent market. But the next guy in line, Ike Taylor, has been nearly just as valuable to his team over the years. And he knows it.

There have been rumblings that the 31-year-old Taylor will return to the Steel City. “I’ve been in Pittsburgh longer than any other city since I was born,” Taylor recently told Scott Brown of Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “That’s home to me. Steelers Nation is crazy. You’re going to find a Steelers fan at some bar, some mall, some college (anywhere). As a professional player you thrive off that.”

But not so fast. Pro Football Talk reports that Taylor fully intends to test the market when free agency begins.

The Steelers should do all they can to prevent this. Taylor is one of the best all-around corners in the NFL. His ability to play press or man coverage is a large reason why Troy Polamalu can freelance. What’s more, the sinewy 6’2”, 195-pounder is one of the best tackling corners in the game, which is key in Pittsburgh’s system.

The Steelers’ cornerback corps is fairly thin even with Taylor. Without Taylor, it’d be downright malnourished.

Ike Taylor to test the free agent market

I watched the Super Bowl and we lost because of turnovers -- 3 to 0. Change that stat line, PGH wins. It was the clearest example ever of the difference in games is usually TO ratio. Rodgers could have played the exact same game, but would have lost if TO's were even or in Steelers favor. And probably if they would have lost just one less turnover.

Let him go

If, at 31, Ike wants to break the bank -- let him go. People criticized the Steelers for letting Faneca go at a similar point in his career, but they did the right thing. Sign Woodley, Troy and others still in their primes instead of a 31 yr old who cant intercept a ball. Be nice to have him back, but if he gets greedy, let him walk. Reminds me of Carnell Lake. Steelers criticized, but letting his greed walk was the right thing. IKE has it good in PGH, if he doen't realize it -- BYE.

Ike Taylor to test the free agent market

History indicates that taylor will not be back in Pitt next season--but by waiting until the 3rd round to draft a cb the steelers may have indicated that they will try to keep him--they will not break the bank for him. if they lose him they will go after a mid level type FA or go with the young guys on the roster.  As far as the purple fan that said he would look good in purple and that is the the way they like their CBs in minny--exactly how many games did you all will last year with your type of corners?

Ike Taylor to test the free agent market

There are plenty of casual fans who think Ike is over-rated and despensible because he doesn't get a high volume of interceptions.  Lets be serious QBs are throwing to BMacs and Gay side because they aren't as good as Ike.  Its not all about interceptions.  We actually don't need our corners to pick off passes, we just need them to defend the pass (keep the WRs from catching the ball).

Ike does that and he will be resigned, I am pretty assured that he will. Why not cut gay, McFadden, Madison, and sign Nnamdi for 8 mil a year?  (If he accepts it.)  Ike + Nnamdi + Troy + Harrison + Woodley + Timmons  = Inpenetrable defense.

He is their best corner but also can be trouble with stupid penalties due to his attitude. Hopefully the corners they drafted last year and this year turn out. I never liked Taylor due to his mouth. They definitely need to dump McFadden and Gay and sign some of the free agents that are out there. If you can put enough pressure on opposing QBs you don't need great corners.

He'd look real good in purple, I know that much.  Exactly how we like are CBs.  Winfield, Griffin, taylor... all the same type of corner.
