The motif of post-draft quarterback analysis this offseason has been, How will the rookie signal-callers learn their first NFL system if there are no offseason team activities?

Of all the rookie quarterbacks, Cam Newton’s mental develoK. Dorsey (US Presswire)pment will be followed the closest. The No. 1 overall pick and highest-profile NCAA player in 2010 has drawn scrutiny for his unproven football IQ (remember Newton telling Jon Gruden before the draft about Auburn’s playbook being number-coded?).

In continuing that scrutiny, we pass along the report from Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer that Newton is learning his playbook at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL with the help of former NFL quarterbacks Chris Weinke and Ken Dorsey.

Weinke, you recall, played for the Panthers. Dorsey may not be as snazzy a mentor as Brett Favre, but his contributions are noteworthy because he played for current Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski at the University of Miami (and briefly in Cleveland, as well). Thus, Dorsey knows most of Carolina’s new offensive system.

“It’s a lot of material that I do not know, but each day I’m going in and learning something,” Newton told the Associated Press. “So by the time . . . the lockout is lifted and I get a chance to talk to Chudzinski and (QB coach Mike) Shula and meet back up with the team, I’ll be on top of my game.”

Newton recently told reporters that he’s putting in 12-hour days at the IMG Academy.

Cam Newton working with former NFL QBs

What a bunch of retards come to this site and post !!! This needs to be repeated. THE BEST TEACHERS OF THE GAME DO NOT COME FROM THE PLAYER POOL OF NFL GREATS THAT PLAYED THE GAME. Some of the best teachers did not even play on the pro level. I like what I have seen so far from Newton. One thing that he will give Panther fans next season is that he will bring excitement to the game, that was lacking last year. Steve Smith did that when he came to the Panthers and the rest of the team fed off of that excitement and became a better team because of that excitement. As a Panther Fan, I am excited already and can hardly wait for the season to begin.

I am happy to hear Cam is working on his craft. While their continues to be speculation on his football IQ their can be no speculation on his talent and god givin abilities. Weinke and Dorsey were good players that ran pro style systems very well and I am sure both can help Cam get a good hold on Panthers system. The difference between successful and unsucessfull players in the NFL are those who can combine skills like strength and speed with IQ like recoqnition and insight. With the lockout keeping players from devoloping with their teams it is nice to see the work ethic and commitment to be a better player.

What I find interesting is that there is little to know acknowledge of how hard this guy is working to be successfull. He is taking advantage of of everyhting anf everyone he possibly can. People where comparing this guy to Russell. If he fails it won't be because he didn't work har aand that should be fine.

Im glad to see he's putting in some time to learn his craft. Im sure he would benefit a little more from players that actually excelled at the pro level and weren't just college stars but its better than nothing. Cam is extremely talented but i dont feel he is going to be anything more than an average player at the pro level. It will be interesting to see how he responds when he realizes this isn't college and everyone is just as big, fast, and athletic as he is and now he is forced to think his way though the game. Because anyone will tell u this game is 10% physical and 90% mental. Im not rooting against him but i am betting against him developing into a major QB. Its just my opinion though.

For those who snub their nose at Dorsey and Weinke...

1. I'm betting you've never played quarterback before. Like, ever. I certainly haven't and I bet it's hard as hell to even suck at it.

2. Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

Newton has a lot to learn. Glad he's learning it.

For Mr. Benoit, dude, you do know Malzahn's office is based off of speed, right? The number system is used for ease and speed of play calling. It wasn't used just for Newton...come on man!

I also think it's nuts that people accuse Newton of taking off and running and he passed for 3000 yds...sigh...how exactly can one QB that sucks at throwing and played in the (or one of the) toughest conference in college football get away with 'only having 36 plays' and 'always passing to the first look'? It really doesn't make sense.

That being said, again, Newton has a ton to learn. That he's working while a lot of people are resting says a lot...

...and hey, Carolina has Jimmy Clausen. Who was, you know, pro ready. Wait...Matt Leinart was pro ready too! I guess I'm just saying you never know.

The more the media and the public attack this guy the more he seems to win.  NCAA allegations, Heisman, National Title and NFL draft he is 4-0 vs the haters who have tried to stop him from being a success. Who knows how good he will end up but I'm going to use his track record of success to this point over all these experts and hater fans. I think you are all wrong like you have been about him the whole time so far.  Popular opinion usually is wrong in sports and this is just another example.

That PhillyAlchemist thing is a loser. Did you read that garbage? Dumb people who try to sound smart are the most annoying thing in the world. You shame your family kid. Go away and don't come back because you are a DOPE.
