Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

Just how awesome are the Washington Redskins? Well, we're in the middle of a lockout that's preventing any football from taking place, they only have three quarterbacks on their roster, only one of whom -- Donovan McNabb -- has any success as a starter, and there's still a war about whether or not John Beck or Rex Grossman is going to start.

Alright, "a war" is a bit of a stretch. But after Beck declared himself the starter amid a motivational speech on Sirius XM the other day and, Grossman also weighed in.

"If you’re asking me, I definitely feel like I’m the starter, but I’m not even signed yet so I’m assuming a lot of things here," Grossman said on the radio, via Cindy Boren's "Early Lead" at the Washington Post. "I feel like I’m coming into the prime of my experience and I know exactly what I can do well, what my weaknesses are and what my strengths are and how it relates to this offense. I’ve been in a lot of situations, crucial games. I’ve played in a Super Bowl. I feel like I’m so much better than I was then that I’d love the opportunity to have a full season with this offense and have a whole season to really feel like this is my team.

"That’s my goal and that’s what I want to happen. I’m assuming a lot of things here, that I’m signed and they’re going to do all those things. At the same time, I don’t see why it doesn’t make great sense."

'Skins Spicy Offseason
Andy and I talked about this on our most recent podcast, but it warrants repeating here: an NFL team going into the season with just Beck and Grossman as starting quarterback options is not only the most insane thing ever, it's also the most Shanahan thing of all-time.

Had Washington not already given Donovan McNabb the kind of extension that makes keeping him in 2011 unbearable, at least the 'Skins could come back with a gimpy, three-headed monster of sorts to compete for the quarterback spot. At this point, though, it seems pretty obvious he's gone, even without having to read between the lines.

It's still possible that the 'Skins could trade for a quarterback and/or pick up someone off of the veteran free agent pile once (when?) the offseason starts.

But whoever that person is, they better understand they're waltzing into a hornet's nest of public controversy that's already buzzing. So, yeah, nothing's really changed in Washington.

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

A war between Beck and Grossman: whoever wins, the Redskins lose.

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

Some folks may not like Beck's bravado but with open competition at especially the quarterback position I'd want every guy to be ready to step up and believe he's the man.

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

Umm, he had 1 good game....  he was on pace for 36 TO over a span of a year.....  he was not that good for the skins... I had the honor of watching this team eac hweek since I am in the DC area.... you are giving this guy too much credit :)    HE IS HORRIBLE!

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

This is stupid! Just because a player said something doesn't make it true. Of course both QB's are gonna say they feel they deserve to be the starter. I hope the skins trade for a QB that turns out to be the starter just so these two end up looking foolish. And until the skins fill all there other holes it wouldn't matter if Peyton Manning was the starter there still gonna struggle.

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

The players are allowed to talk about whatever they want to talk about, who told you otherwise? I don't think Beck needs to sit and learn behind McNabb, we all watched last year as he showed what he was capable of in that system... not too much. Beck has sat and learned for a few years now, it's time for someone to see whether he has what it takes or not.

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

Lumpy, I think you missed the whole point of the article. McNabb has a poisonous figure due in the coming year of his contract, and it is assumed that the Redskins can't afford to do anything but cut him. Neither Beck nor Grossman are stating that they are shoe-ins to beat out McNabb for the position. Everyone is making the assumption that McNabb's departure is fait accompli.

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

Actually, although Grossman has never lived up to the buzz created after his college results, he hasn't really been a disaster. The one year he started 16 games he threw for 3200 yards and more TDs than INTs. In the three games he started last year, he had the best QB rating of his career, and the best TD to INT ratio of his career. There are several examples in NFL history of journeyman type quarterbacks who bloomed late in their careers to make names for themselves ... Rich Gannon, anyone? Even has the same initials. LOL He may be right or wrong about his prospects for starring and succeeding as a starter, but the idea that he could do well isn't all that far fetched.

with a genius like rat face shanahan running the show--does it really matter Grossman or Beck?  just listen and the head coach will soon have you convinced he can win regardless of Runing backs/qbs/receivers etc...because he is that smart.  another great signing by danny boy snider.

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

I know that sports teams are not allowed to talk about players that are not under contract, but how come players can talk about where they want to play and who they want to play for. Besides, with the NFL lockout in place teams and players should not be talking about football at all.

I suggest that the Redskins forget about Rex Grossman and start McNabb. Beck will learn from McNabb. Once the Redskins win or lose enough they will trade McNabb for a high draft pick.

Rex Grossman: No, 'I'm the starter'

Who really cares who the starter is, Grossman or Beck. Both suck and the Redskins are going to let their loyal fans suffer through another 5-11 or 6-10 season. By mid season 50 yard line front row seats will be available on e-bay for $50. It a shame that fans will let their $250 tickets go for so little to opposing teams fans.
