Freddie Mitchell to Kolb: Beware of Reid

For a guy who never caught more than 35 passes in a season during his four-year career, former Eagles WR Freddie Mitchell remains outspoken six years into his retirement. Whether he remains relevant is another matter entirely.

Either way, Mitchell had an interesting reaction to the story that Philadelphia coach Andy Reid indicated to backup QB Kevin Kolb that he would do whatever was best for Kolb heading into next season (perhaps not coincidentally, Reid is on record as saying the Eagles could be interested in trading Kolb).

The following is what Mitchell told WIP radio in Philadelphia, via sportsradiointerviews.com:

“Believe that if you want Kevin. Believe that if you want. Andy Reid … I love him to death. He’s like my father and whatever else, but I’m going to keep it real. Andy is going to do what is best for the Philadelphia Eagles. I tried when I was going on after we lost the Super Bowl [XXXIX] …I went in there and I did not want to go to the media, and I said, ‘Hey Coach Reid, I had problems with Donovan McNabb. You know I can’t eat off of 12 catches a year. I need more catches. I’m doing all the things with the blocking and whatever else to make it happen. I need more catches. Donovan will not throw me the ball.’ Andy Reid was like, ‘Okay Fred, well just don’t tell nobody. You don’t have to come to this next mini-camp. We’re going to try to…I know a couple of teams and we’re going to try to trade you.’

“At the end of the day what he tried to do was he tried to put a price tag on me that nobody was even going to touch. When they found out that they wasn’t going to touch me, he released me, and then the blackball began with all kinds of dirt saying I was a cancer to the team. I talk too much and everything else. It’s funny because you never heard a teammate complain about me. You never heard that or whatever else, but he put the cancer [comment] on. Kevin Kolb, do not think them guys or anybody in the NFL is your friend. The only friend that you have is your agent and, if you’re a left or right-handed quarterback, is your arm. That’s it. Them guys at the end of the day they are going to go and save their job, save their butt, and go out and do what’s best for the Philadelphia Eagles. You need to do what you need to do.”

Ah yes, but that’s life, isn’t it? And though we probably didn’t need a 32-year-old former wide receiver to tell us that, it's nice to know that Mitchell is still around.

Freddie Mitchell to Kolb: Beware of Reid

As a coach in the NFL or any position of management, wouldn't you *do what you have to do* to make your team better? What kind of baloney is this guy talking about? I can tell this guy is one of those *nobody understands me* kind of person. In his own words he says how Reid would lookout for the team and he is all about himself. Get a life my man and stop crying about your pathetic career, you 32 and already retired attention whore. You weren't relavent then ...... why in the world would you think you're relavent now????? Because a radio station asked to make ass out yourself and you didn't really understand the question??? ....... Get real

Freddie Mitchell to Kolb: Beware of Reid

Even if you want to take the darkest perspective of Andy Reid-- paint him in your mind's eye as the devil incarnate and focused solely on destroying the career of a player who really pissed him off, you still have to ask yourself one question.  Does anybody doubt another GM or head coach in the NFL would love nothing more than to take a former 1st round pick another team discarded and turn him into a top flight receiver?  Freddie Mitchell's argument/claims against Reid only go so far.  Even if you hate everything Reid stands for and despise the Eagles as a franchise because of it, you can't honestly believe that the word of Reid when circulated through back channels would end a player's career completely.  There's always one or two desperate teams out there who give a player a chance if they have a need they think can be filled.

The truth is Freddie Mitchell sucked as a 1st round pick in the NFL.  He never caught a ton of passes because he could not learn how to get open in the NFL passing game.  His skills worked well at the college level but he wasn't a four-year monster in the college game.  He was invisible his first two seasons and didn't really show anything until his third year.  If he had half the skills he claims he had, there would have been opportunities for him to catch on somewhere.  He lined up with Terrell Owens as the team's top WR in 2004 and still couldn't shake single coverage.  I think Andy Reid is a putz but I've got his back on this one.  Mitchell was a waste of physical talent who didn't adjust to the pro game.  The only thing that was NFL-quality about Freddie Mitchell were his pre- and post-game sound bites for the media.

Freddie Mitchell to Kolb: Beware of Reid

Look at Donovan McNabb and Brian Dawkins.  He might not be the best source, but he speaks the 100% truth.  I never cared for Freddie Mitchell, but at the same time this is one of the most rational pieces of advice a player is likely to hear from anyone.

Freddie Mitchell to Kolb: Beware of Reid

Freddie Mitchell got blackballed? Really, they had to tell other teams to "stay away?" I'm sure him being black balled is why no other team picked him up once he was a free agent. I wouldn't pick up Freddie Mitchell to play on my kickball team, much less to be my 5th WR. What a douche. Guess what Freddie, Canton probably isn't going to be beating down your door this season either. You may however go on to play in the NFL this season if we somehow wind up with a replacements league. I'd be willing to bet that Andy Reid is the only one that gives you a shot on that team as well.

Freddie Mitchell to Kolb: Beware of Reid

If you feel that way, why are you making him relevant by copying another person's work to present as your own here?
Where did he ever present it as his own? Better yet, why the eff do you feel the need to comment if it's so irrelevent?

The most pathetic posters are the idiots like you that constantly bash the writers for doing their job all while acting like you could do so much better.

If you can do better then farking do it and get his job, otherwise shut the farkup you farking crybaby.

The only friend that you have is your agent
This comment alone shows what a moron this guy is.

This guy reminds me of the Redskins WR that blew up in the SB against the Broncos and talked out his a$s about how great he was and never did krap since then. (Timmy Smith??) Insulted his team mates and all the rest. I'm sure there are tons and tons of NFL players, current and former, that hate some of their team mates. They have enough class to keep their mouths shut.

Fred-Ex...once a loser always a loser. Another guy that had to give himself his own nickname because he sucked too bad for anyone else to give him one.
