David Tyree is not in favor of same-sex marriage

A few days ago we brought you the news of former Giants LB Michael Strahan’s endorsement of marriage equality for everyone.

So, with the New York state legislature teetering on the brink of passing a law that allows the legalization of same-sex marriage, former Giants hero David Tyree has weighed in on the matter.

And though there have been some high-profile athletes who have come out in favor of the law – Strahan is one and NHLer Sean Avery is another – Tyree takes the opposite approach (and the same attitude that the most commenters took on the original Strahan post).

Namely, Tyree says anarchy will rule if same-sex couples continue to marry.

"This will be the beginning of our country sliding toward, it's a strong word, but anarchy,” Tyree told the anti-gay group, the National Organization for Marriage, via the New York Post. "How can marriage be marriage for thousands of years and now all the sudden because a minority, an influential minority, has a push or agenda ... and totally reshapes something that was not founded in our country.”

It’s interesting, though. In his interview, Tyree  talks about how his father wasn’t in the home when he was growing up (he says he was impacted severely by that). But a fair question to follow that would be: Well, what if he was raised by two mothers in a committed relationship instead of just one mother? Or two fathers? Would that have been so much worse than growing up in a single-parent home?

You can check out the video below to see the full interview.

DA-RAIDERS WROTE: "Fearing homosexual marriage? Perhaps you better look in the mirror and question why you fear gay people so much. Maybe they should drink at "queer" drinking fountains and stay at "queer only" hotels. If jesus taught you effing morons anything it should have been compassion. He had compassion for those who strung him up, asking the lord to forgive them. Next time, before you open your ignorant mouth why don't you ask yourself WWJD? And that's coming from a non-believer you hateful pricks."

My, my, my...such LANGUAGE!! Nowhere did David Tyree express "hate", whereas your post seethes with it.

Also, nowhere did Tyree evidence "fear (of) gay people". The trope that people who disagree with the political and social agenda of the New Left are "fearful" is a SMEAR. These people disagree with you, which is their RIGHT. Freedom of conscience is the first freedom, without which no other freedom s conceivable. Just because you are free to think and SPEAK your opinions, it doesn't follow necessarily that you should be given free rein to ACT as you please. The proper use of the commons is ineluctably a POLITICAL question. Any other way of settling our differences is an invitation to uncivil disobedience. Sic semper tyrannis.

It isn't for blue hairs or Queen Liz or Ellen DeGeneres or nine black-robed despots to make us do their bidding. The Legislatures are where such questions properly belong in a republican democracy. The losers need only obey the laws while they seek to change them. And suck it up when they fail to do so or when their gains later come undone.

Alternately, you can continue to undermine the American experiment by undemocratic means, until those whom you hate rise up and strike you down.

Good for Tyree.  I'm getting sick of all these g.d. homos trying to run things and ruin everything for everyone.  You know it's true so quit trying to deny it you bunch of closet friendly fire clown punchers!

One thing I would like to say is that at least he spoke his mind in a respectable way. He was not completely irrational, he was not calling people names, he was not saying I am right everyone else is wrong. I found it kind of refreshing to here an athlete actually have a meaningful opinion on an important subject. I completely disagree with his premise, but I do applaud his ability to discuss his point. I hope other people can speak as controlled and rationally as he did - regardless of your beliefs. As I look through the message boards, things get very personal and mean very fast - I encourage people to try and voice their opinion without becoming mean and disrespectful.

Just my opinion.

"What a fool. The enslavement of blacks was a legal institution for thousands of years also, not founded in our country, and the exploitation of Tyree's ancestors resulted in the foundation of this very rich nation he now lives and thrives in. But all of a sudden a minority, an influential minority (abolitionists), worked tirelessly to end such a heinous institution. I can't stand these self-righteous hypocrites. Liberty and justice for all, as the Constitution states. Gays getting married has no effect upon your life unless you allow it to by being an over-sensitive, moralist douche. Put your Bibles down for a second and let people live the way they want if they aren't hurting anyone else, you fascists. "

Ok Seneca 77, same sex marriage vs slavery. On a personal level, I could care less about who loves one another, male, female or otherwise. But why did you choose slavery as a point of comparision to same sex marriage? Because they both were not founded in our country? Really, you can do better than that. Did you choose slavery because Tyree is black? Do you have a hidden agenda? This is Tyree's opinion, he does not speak for all Americans. Saying that, everyone is entitled to an opinion. I don't necessarily agree with Tyree, but to play the slavery card is well, just low. It does not speak to intellect when someone resorts to playing the slavery card. That ugly chapter in American history has no relation to same sex marriage, no matter how you try to frame it. I think you are also thriving on the unpaid labor of Tyree's ancestors, should you be living in America. By the way, blacks were not enslaved for thousands of years, do a little fact checking before making such statements. Europeans were enslaving one other long before blacks entered the picture. If it is America that you speak of, slaves were introduced here in Jamestown in 1619. Slavery was then legalized in Virginia and Maryland later. Thanks.

Blame Jesus?

Ummm....the concept of marriage existed in societies throughout the world LO..............NG before Jesus even came on the scene boo.  Also, the OLDEST form of marriage on earth, still practiced in some parts of the world, and even parts of America is ONE MAN AND AND MULTIPLE wives.  There's been "marriage" in primitive tribes for THOUSANDS of years and some of them had never even heard the word Jesus until the 1970's.  Where did you go to school?  Frown

What in tarnation does Jesus have to do with marriage?  It's not something he invented!  Different cultures have had different ideas about marriage for centuries.  Guess what?  Many of them are cultures who have never made all that big a deal about Jesus.  You know, really crazy places you've never heard of before, like most of Asia and the Mid-East!

Oh...then by ALL means then, let me rethink my stance on the issue.  I'd sooner be influenced by the opinions of a pop-star or television actor before taking sociopolitical and "moral" advice from a jock. They can catch balls and run from one side of a field to another.  Yeah, I think we should look up to what they say about anything under sun.  Please!...  Why does the media even report such crap, with big headlines?  "Dude who can throw a ball and run thinks xyz about abc!"...Who fuckin' cares???????
