Depending on the timing, there are between 200 and 800 million reasons for the owners and players to come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement in the coming weeks. The hope is that a deal gets done by mid-July and the 2011 season can officially begin, first with an abbreviated free-agent signing period, followed by training camps and then the regular season.

Free agency will probably be a free-for-all, but if there's a new CBA in the next 12 days or so, the rest of the NFL schedule should be like any other year.  We're not sure if Jerry Jones knows something the rest of us don't, or if it's wishful thinking, but either way, the Cowboys have set their training camp dates.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, a city official confirmed that the Cowboys are tentatively set to start practicing in San Antonio at the Alamodome on July 29.

Mike Sawaya, who heads the city’s convention, sports and entertainment facilities, told the paper that the Cowboys will start moving equipment into the building on July 25, and the annual pep rally and concert to kick off training camp is set for July 28. Sawaya said that the team has the dome reserved through August 13.

The Express-News adds that the team could be forced to move camp to Irving, Texas if the lockout drags on past mid-July.

Shouldn't the league be allowing all of the 32 teams to function independantly as far as it's employees are concerned since there is no "union"? After all, the players are employees of the individual TEAMS, NOT THE LEAGUE. They are admitting to anti-trust  by NOT acting as individuals.  Sure, the league can set the rules of the game: which could include total team salary for a particular contest, number of players on the roster for the game, etc. The rest of the teams business should be up to them to determine.
That is what the courts are set to decide...unless their is an agreement reached...

The lockout is based on the fact the union DOES still exist and the courts will rule whether they de-unionized simply to gain leverage, but in essence still exist.

If they decide they do not still exist "legally" then the lockout ends immediately and the above statement would be true...

However, when/if this happens, all current rules will also no longer exist and the NFL as we all know and love will no longer exist either...

General rules can be followed as part of a league, but all rules pertaining to labor such as the draft, free agency, salary caps/floors...all that makes this the most competitive league in existence will go away.

On the other hand, if there is no union, then who is Smith negotiating for?  And doesn't the fact that a federal judge has ordered the parties to negitiate indicate that there is still a union to negitiate with?

Too many questions with too many people saying they have control under the law... I'd just go ahead and call my employees back to work and let the league try to stop me....another anti-trust suit I imagine? LOL.

Can somebody explain how all this really fits together? The judges and participants don't seem to know....

"Stretch-face" aka Jerry Jones is ready to put out another over-hyped, underperforming team.  Now look I am a lifelong Cowboys fan, but the current product being offered gives me no reason to celebrate.  I remember all too well the teams he put together over the past decade, and they were just that.  OVER HYPED and UNDERPERFORMING.  I don't even get excited anymore when we make the playoffs, because I know Romo and Co. will not get past the first round.

PR move.

Jones is holding out to end revenue sharing. By scheduling the start of camp, he is saying he wants to get moving, but he is also going to delay a resolution if he insists on ending revenue sharing.
