Ward's agent: Hines not impaired while driving

This morning, some weird news broke that Hines Ward was arrested in Georgia for driving under the influence.

Everything about the story was strange -- that it was Ward who was (allegedly) committing the criminal act, that it was so close to a potential new labor deal and that it was in Georgia (which has not treated the Steelers well).

But there's apparently a chance it's not as big a deal as previously thought -- Ward's manager Andrew Ree told TMZ on Saturday afternoon that his client didn't, in fact, drive under the influence of alcohol.

"He cooperated fully with the police and truthfully answered all of their questions," Ree said. "We are currently in the process of ascertaining all the facts. From our preliminary investigation we can tell you that we are confident that the facts will show that Hines was NOT impaired by alcohol while driving.

"However, Hines is deeply saddened by this incident and apologizes to his fans and the Steelers organization for this distraction."

Ward doesn't seem like, as Mike Freeman pointed out, the type of guy you'd expect to get nailed like this.

And maybe it'll end up turning out that Ward didn't deserve to get busted and that he didn't do anything wrong.

That'd obviously be good news for everyone in the Steelers organization, Ward and his fans.

Ward's agent: Hines not impaired while driving

Does anyone really give a rip?  Professional athletes have the same problems everyone else has, so why make it news?  We all know someone who's been arrested for a DUI, and although I hate drinking & driving, it's sadly an everyday occurrence.  If he's guilty, he'll think better next time, and if he's not, this will all wash away.  To put something like this in the spotlight, especially when there was no crash involved (thankfully), seems like a waste of reporting.  Stick with the lockout stories because if there's no season, Hines Ward will be an irrelevant name anyway!

 Report does not state what his BAC was, so it is possible he didn't break the law. I love the Steelers and Hines is one of my favorite players, but if he had a couple of drinks and was driving, he showed a complete breakdown in common sense. Call a cab. I wonder if, during the lockout, the league still offers the players a ride anywhere, if they are impared like they did when there was a CBA. Regardless, it was a dumb thing to do.

@IPCC:

I was wondering about how a Steeler's fan could react this way to this story. It may be that Hines is guilty and, if so, he will pay the price hopefully. If not, then back to everyday life.

Your hate for Ward confused me, however. Outside of PGH, a lot of people dislike Ward for his on-field tactics. Off-field he is well-respected. I then had a look at your profile and saw your kind words for Palin and Bachmann and your hate for Ward, Jeter and Obama. Maybe there is a small color problem in your head ? I don't think that Pittsburgh has a KKK chapter, but I'm sure you can find one in WV.

Presuming that someone that likes Palin and Bachmann but not Obama is racist seems to have a bit of a racial overtone itself. Palin/Bachmann and Obama are political figures that have very different views, and are quite polarizing. Ward and Jeter are players on two very polarizing teams (primarily due to the success that those teams have achieved over the years). Bridging from their to racism is a bit of a wide sterotyping jump. Seems that if you want to point fingers about bias, you might want to start by not exhibiting it.

BTW, I am not a fan of Palin, Bachmann, Obama, or Jeter, but I do like Ward.
