Despite saying last month that he still wanted to play pro football, Chiefs LB Mike Vrabel apparently will get into another line of work -- coaching at his alma mater for his one-time Ohio State roommate.

That’s the word from the Columbus Dispatch, which reports that Vrabel is expected to be named as an assistant coach to new Buckeyes coach Luke Fickell.

Lately, Vrabel has been busy in NFLPA-NFL negotiations, and it’d be a bit of a surprise if he actually retired from his 14-year career after starting all 16 games for Kansas City last year and considering how hard he’s worked on the labor front.

Plus, after attending Fickell’s introductory news conference in June, he told reporters, “Luke knows I still have time to play.”

But the Dispatch writes that a news conference is tentatively scheduled for Monday. Vrabel probably would be added as a linebacker coach, Fickell’s old assistant position under former coach Jim Tressel.

Hmmmm. A thief and a felon is named as a Buckeye assistant coach. Seems like a perfect fit. Vrabel represents what Ohio State is all about almost as well as Terell Pryor, Maurice Clarett and Jim Tressel

Perfect hire, knew this was coming for about a month now. Alot of youth and fire on the staff now and going forward thats what Ohio State is going to need.

They might get a one year bowl ban but then back to business as usual on the field. People are in for a rude awakening when they dont get hammered. I'm marking every thread so that I can come back and laugh at the disappointment.

Welcome Coach Vrabel!

I was happy that KC got Vrabel and he did a good job, but we do need a bit of youth in the LB position and Vrabel is kind of long in the tooth.  Him going to OSU could be a huge mistake.  OSU is about to get the hammer dropped on them and it will mean far less scholarships and visits plus no bowl games.  To step into that position is not a good idea, but with what Vrabel has done in the offseason, it might a better career move.  So, good luck, Mike, OSU is about to become toast and that whole staff (including you) will be gone in 2 years.

If he does actually retire, the Patriots should sign him for one day.

He made huge contributions to those SB winning teams.

How many touchdowns did he catch? Like 10? If I'm not mistaken, I think he only dropped one pass Brady ever threw to him!

I hope he enjoys his one season in Columbus. After that, Ohio St. will go out and find their permanent head coach, who will probably bring in his own staff.
