Mason says teams are just scared of Flacco

Say this for Ravens WR Derrick Mason: even if he’s prone to a little bit of hyperbole, he’s going to defend his teammates until the end.

Obviously, Mason heard that Steelers LB LaMarr Woodley said that Baltimore QB Joe Flacco could never lead the Ravens to the Super Bowl (because, naturally, they couldn’t get past Pittsburgh to do so) and then listened to Bengals LB Dhani Jones -- who has become somewhat mouthy lately as well -- saying, in effect, that Flacco is not good at his job when he’s pressured.

Well, Mason takes issue with the Flacco criticism. That’s apparently why he told the Carroll County Times that the reason Flacco has taken some crap this offseason is because everybody is frightened of him (Flacco’s awesome wedding pictures notwithstanding).

“When you're good, people are scared of you," Mason told the paper. "Honestly, that's what I've seen. When people realize the potential that you have, they get very, very scared and then you see them scrambling to say bad things about the guy.

"Joe doesn't care. He really doesn't. For the Woodleys and the Dhani Jones and the rest of them, you see there aren't no head coaches or general managers and no smart players saying Joe can't play. The last thing you want to do is wake up a sleeping giant. Whether he says it or not, they've given him added fuel."

While you might not think of Flacco as one of the game’s elites -- he’s probably no better than a top-10 quarterback at this point -- he’s also improved in each of his three seasons in the league. His completion percentage continues to climb, his passing yardages and touchdowns continue to rise, and his interceptions continue to drop.

But the big question is this: could Flacco lead his team past the Steelers and into a possible Super Bowl? Because until then, he’s going to be ripe for criticism for defenders around the NFL. Even if they are "scared" of his potential.

Yea, I'm terrified that Falco will get beat by the Steelers in the playoffs yet again.  Props to Mason for backing his QB, but until Falco actually beats Steelers in playoffs his words ring hollow.

I DID NOT AND DO NOT CARE, that Modell his team (Not Browns) to Baltimore.  Art Modell was a good for the NFL, however, he STUNK as an owner any many, many Browns fans are happy that he is gone.  I am mad because he retains 1% of the Ravens so that he does NOT have to pay the families of the people who LOANED him the money in 1961 to buy the Browns. Art Modell has not returned to Cleveland since 1995, has not attended any of his former players funerals, did not attend HOF induction of Ozzie.  Cleveland is not better off since he left the NEW owner, loaned Modell the jet to get to BALTIMORE. SAME TYPE OF OWNER as MODELL.

Yeah I wish we had the Carolina Panthers in our division...2 automatic wins right there.  You had 2 playoff teams in your division (same as AFC North), and both were one and dones.  I really don't see what is so 'tough' about your division.
Which division doesn't have a doormat though?  I think all of them had at least one really bad team.  Except the NFCW, those were all bad teams.

A couple of divisions had 2 10+ win teams, but the NFCS had 3, so you can make the argument it was the toughest because of that.  I wouldn't agree, but you can make it.

I can accept what you are saying to a degree northeast.  However you can not deny that Flacco and Ryan's career numbers are almost identical, and Flacco has won playoff games, Ryan hasn't, so I dont see how you could see Ryan leading his team anywhere other than one and done.  For whatever reason Ryan was over hyped by the media desperate for a feel good story in Atlanta after the Vick debacle.  I personally depise the Ravens in a lot of ways as a Steelers fan, and I certainly have little motivation to stick up for Flacco, but to say that Ryan is a superior QB seems a little ridiculous.

I think your posting with your team blinders on there mrjade06. I'm not a big fan of either QB, but I'd take Matt Ryan over Joe Flacco any day. Joe Flacco = good physical attributes/average QB mental ability & intangibles, where Matt Ryan = average physical attributes/above average QB mental ability & intangibles. As an unbiased observer I'd say that Matt Ryan stands a much better chance at going to a Super Bowl and being the deciding factor if his team wins, where as if Joe Flacco were to get to a Super Bowl and his team wins it would probably be his defense that does it for him.

Flacco is no doubt the weak link on that team.  I like how everyone is scrambling to pretend Anquan Boldin just became a shitty player overnight.  It's not Boldin, it's Flacco.  Flacco needs to step it up especially in the playoffs, but right now you can't be confident in Flacco at all.  A lot of times either you have that clutch ability or you don't, you can't just develop it later on in your career.  We'll see what happens with Flacco, the Ravens have to hope he can be elite, but right now he is easily in the bottom half of NFL QBs.
