Cedric Benson arrested for assault

For the most part, the NFL has avoided a run of players getting in trouble with the law while not under team supervision. (Kenny Britt being the exception, of course.) The news, however, that Cedric Benson was arrested in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning won't help that cause.

UPDATE (8:45 p.m. ET): According to wire reports, Benson was released from jail on Sunday following an arrest on an assault charge, the second year in a row he has gotten into trouble in his home state.

More details:
Travis County sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said Benson was arrested in downtown Austin on a misdemeanor count of assault with bodily injury with family violence. Benson attorney Sam Bassett said in a statement the arrest followed "a conflict" between Benson and a male former roommate.

Wade said Benson posted a $10,000 bond and was released just before 2 p.m.

Bassett considers the "family violence" aspect of the charge erroneous "since the alleged male victim no longer is Mr. Benson's household member and was not a household member for the past few days." Conviction of assault with family violence would draw a stiffer penalty than simple assault.
The Bengals were predictably mum on the situation. "In cases like this, we don't feel it's appropriate to comment before there's some kind of legal resolution," team spokesman Jack Brennan said.

Benson will be an unrestricted free agent in 2011 (assuming a reversion to old CBA rules), and there was a good chance that he could land a nice contract because of the market's demand for running backs.

Benson/Bengals Offseason

This arrest -- along with the fact that Benson has a previous assault charge from June 2010, in Austin -- won't do much to boost his value.

And depending on whether commissioner Roger Goodell and the league can enforce the personal conduct policy while the players are locked out, Benson could end up facing a suspension, something he miraculously avoided the last time he was arrested for assault.

Report: Cedric Benson arrested for assault

I look for the Bengals to go 12-4 this year

12 Arrests
 4 Convictions

They have to be the most disfuctional team in the history of sports. They do not pick charactor guys

This is also the reason they never win anything

These guys make millions of dollars to play a game.  Is it that much to ask that they conduct themselves like professionals?  Most major corporations would not tolerate the type of behavior that they exhibit, and would terminate their employment.
Though Ray was never convicted of the charge, the grand jury indicted him for the murder.  He mysteriously throws away his suit from that night (never recovered) and lies to investigators throughout the investigation. He also reached out-of-court settlements with both of the victims families so they wouldn't proceed with their civil cases against him.  I would call that more than "WITNESSING" a murder. Ray Lewis is also not the exception to the rule, a staggering number of these guys go on to involve themselves in a number of illicit activities both during and after their playing days.

Report: Cedric Benson arrested for assault

Did he just mean the fans?  I think he meant everyone would be bored and more apt to get into trouble.  As a Steelers fan, I have been conditioned to dislike all things Ray-Ray.  As the years go on, though, a definite level of respect has arisen for the man.  After the incident at the Super Bowl where he WITNESSED a  murder (hater fans calling him a murderer is getting old as it is inaccurate and technically slanderous), he has done nothing but the right things.  Now, years later, he has become somewhat of a wise, old soothsayer who speaks his mind with purpose.  I never thought I would say this, but Ray speaks the truth and knows the game, the players, and society.
As with all of this, though, before we all start spouting off, let's get the facts first before we start grandstanding, soapboxing, and being self-righteous.  These types of fans are more annoying than the criminal acts, themselves.  A bunch of judgmental, self-righteous, whiny cowards who hide behind a keyboard and enjoy pointing fingers.  These fans could care less about the actual truth on any of these incidents and would rather contribute to gossip so they can attempt to feel better about their own miserable lives.

If you want to go back and watch the interview...He implied The Players, not the fans would get into trouble with the law....He wasn't specific.
