Vikings punter calls 4 named plaintiffs greedy

This morning we noted that, as two of the 10 plaintiffs in the Brady v. the NFL case, Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins could each ask for $10 million in compensation. At the time, the thinking was that the other plaintiffs wouldn't seek similarly high payouts because they either weren't in position to (free agents, already under contract, retired, etc.) or, as elite quarterbacks, already had all the leverage they needed.

Turns out, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are also looking for settlements of their own.'s Mike Freeman writes that "Multiple sources say that Manning, one of the named plaintiffs, wants immediate free agency in order to settle the lawsuit. Those sources also say Brees wants to be a free agent next year. The sources say lawyers for the NFLPA have asked NFL owners for those two things in addition to the reported demands from Mankins and Jackson."

So, yeah, tying a nice little bow on a new collective bargaining agreement doesn't seem as close as it did just a few hours ago. That said, Freeman is confident a deal will get done this week.

So while all hope isn't lost, Viking punter Chris Kluwe is wholly unimpressed with the news that four of the 10 named plaintiffs (who, by the way, are supposed to be representing the other 1,896 NFL players) appear to be cutting their own deals. So, naturally, Kluwe took to Twitter to voice his displeasure.

That doesn't leave much room for interpretation. The problem, of course, is that, as Freeman pointed out this morning, a new CBA can't be agreed upon unless all the plaintiffs settle the case.

That's much easier when some of them aren't looking out just for themselves.

That is a disgrace. If these four jerks hold up the season I'll be more than a little upset. I hope all 4 are boo'd mercilessly by both home and road fans when the season starts. They are screwing their fellow players, organizations and most importantly, the fans. How much do Brady and Manning make? They need this? I expect more from those 2 especially. A-holes.

Although he's calling it like it is, you certainly don't need a tweet from a punter to know that greed runs rampant in the NFL. And Manning is a perfect example. Appaerently he doesn't make enough on the field, since he has to do all those stupid TV adds as well. We just had a huge lay-off at our company today. A bunch of really good people too, all with families. Guys like Manning and Brees should really put things in perspective. I don't begrudge their wealth, but do they have to sticj it to people too?

I thought the purpose of the suit was to push the negotiations along.  Obviously the personal interests of the few were the motivating factors for the suits.  Why didn't the NFLPA assist all of the players who were similarly situated?  The NFLPA now runs the risk of creating two classes of player...oh, wait, they decertified.  It should be called the NFL Every Man for himself Association!

seahawker - are you serious? Heresay and conjecture? Were you up watching "Law and Order" last night in your tinfoil helmet? ESPN is reporting the same story that CBS is reporting. So is Sports Illustrated, which is only owned by CNN. Damn you, CNN, for making up news! If you're too stupid to grasp why Brees and Manning would want to get to unrestricted free agency as quickly as possible, then you're too stupid to waste time on. Our problem is that Manning and Brees are elevating their own needs over the needs of the other 2,000 players in the NFL. They're demanding a special set of rules to settle a case that could easily just be dropped. As far as Mankins and Jackson, they probably have a beef, but the CBA their Union previously agreed to says they don't.

And this isn't heresay or conjecture, Perry Mason. Heresay would be if Kluwe heard someone else say he heard Manning and Brees make these demands. Conjecture would be him forming his opinion based on nothing. He is forming his opinion based on every news outlet that is covering the lockout.

Nice to see all you sheep just go off in rampant bashing etc based on a few less than credible sources leaking information. They are negotiating a new deal ppl. Every leak or article regarding sourced info is all carefully presented to try and gain leverage or favor in one way or another. CBS is reporting this to get hits and that is why they are a huge corporation because they give us what we want.

Kluwe is just plain dumb for reacting based on heresay and conjecture. The rest of you who have a need to bash players, owners etc to play a game you love to watch, need to find better things to do with your lives. It is business first always. Accept it. No player owes you anything. They are doing a job and owners are doing a job. Let them complete their jobs to their satisfaction.
