Smith to players: 'There is no agreement'

There was much rejoicing in the land of NFL fans on Thursday night when the NFL owners voted 31-0 to ratify a settlement agreement. There's just one problem: it's not exactly in-line with what the players were expecting.

CBSSSports.com has obtained an email from NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith to the players a few moments ago that indicates precisely how they feel.

"As you know the Owners have ratified their proposal to settle our differences. It is my understanding that they are forwarding it to us," the email reads. "As you may have heard, they apparently approved a supplemental revenue sharing proposal. Obviously, we have not been a part of those discussions.

Latest on Lockout

"As you know from yesterday, issues that need to be collectively bargained remain open, other issues such as workers compensation, economic issues and end of deal terms remain unresolved.

Smith's email concludes in a fashion that should sufficiently point out how differently the players view the owners' proposal.

"There is no agreement between the NFL and the Players at this time," Smith concludes. "I look forward to our call tonight."

The biggest fear for everyone involved is that the players might see the owners' decision to approve their own deal as a way of pushing public perception against the players. And that's entirely possible, but we won't know for sure until the end of the NFLPA call.

One thing's for sure, though: this isn't over yet.

Smith to players: 'There is no agreement'

Smith is a piece of garbage who is going to see the players reject his stance as they want to get back to work. He is a self center ego driven person who realized when the strike is over that no one will remember him unless he keeps the lock out in place. The players are getting more than the deserve and they better accept the offer or the moderate owners who feel that they gave up too much may decide too hell with it and pull the offer and the players will not have anything. Breese, Manning and Brady need to tell Smith to shut up and advise the players to take the offer - enough is enough

Smith to players: 'There is no agreement'

This is just rediculous. For one, I cant go to my boss and demand more money or im gone because they would just replace me. EVERY PLAYER IS REPLACEABLE. If the players drive the NFL away and make way for the UFL then my all means, keep acting stupid. If somthing isnt radified today, I am done with the NFL and taking my money, time and energy to college.

SMITH IS JUST TRYING TO DRAG THIS ON FOR PERSONAL GAIN.---- BOTTOM LINE.

Smith to players: 'There is no agreement'

Smith agreed with Goddell as to the terms being voted on for the owners. He now has to have a union in order to 1) complete the few issues that can only be negotiated with a union and; 2) to agree to the same terms the owners have now agreed to subject to the union being reconstituted and subject to player ratification. It is up to Smith to get the agreement done with the players. Against Smith is Jeffrey Kessler, attorney for the players in the anti-trust case (obviously Kessler wins millions more maybe billions more if that case continues.)

What is obvious is the players have become suspicious of DeMaurice Smith. But he is their champion. They have empowered him, as head of the association, to negotiate these issues with the owners. He has done so and only needs to reconstitute the union to finish the negotiations. Reportedly his player reps for the clubs pitched a fit yesterday on seeing the terms for the first time (thanks to the special magistrate). Even so Smith has ruled this roost for long enough to get it done now.

Another strange situation is the players have widely proclaimed for months that they want to be on the field playing football and that the bad old owners have prevented them from doing so. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Do you still want to play football? Your negotiator has finished what he can do. So vote for the union to reconstitute and the agreement so far to be ratified and these other relatively minor issues can get finished. The owners have opened their facilities for the players. Let's play some football!

Ignorance knows no bounds

So, apparently everybody posting has read all 600 pages of the proposed new deal. Just as I was ready to give the owners a break they go and pull a stunt like this. It takes both sides to make a deal. You can't just go into another country and bomb the crap out of it and arrest their president and throw him in jail (Panama) or go into another country and bomb the crap out of it and arrest their president and execute him (Iraq) or go into another country and bomb the crap out of it and demand their president leave the country (Lybia). Oops, my bad, I understand why you think the way you do.
