Report: Eagles have interest in Brett Favre (!)

You know, maybe Brett Favre's not the problem. Yes, he's made a mockery of the notion of a retirement press conference, and yes, he's brought a lot of this on himself by subsequent un-retirement press conferences. But when if finally seems as if he and his Wrangler jeans have moseyed off into the sunset, the media refuse to let him go.

The latest silliness: Howard Eskin of Philadelphia WIP, reported Saturday night that the "Eagles have some interest in Favre once they trade [Kevin] Kolb. Sources told me it's possible. Not sure what Favre thinks."

We don't know what Favre thinks either, but here's what he said last month about the prospects of returning to the NFL: “I don’t want to put my body through that anymore. I’ve been beat up enough.”

Favre has been known to say one thing and do another, but Favre's brother, Scott, has also weighed in on the matter, telling the Biloxi Sun Herald's Al Jones, "I would say there's less than a 1% chance (he would return). He is retired."

A few weeks ago, NFL.com's Gil Brandt, without speaking to Favre or anyone in Favre's camp, suggested that Favre still wants to play, in part because Favre offered to work with Cam Newton. (Yes, we're confused, too.)

We'll repeat what we said at the time: "We actually believe Favre when he said he's been beaten up enough. And if he gets a hankerin' for a comeback, we'd encourage him to watch these."

It's also worth pointing out that one of Eskin's sources told him in June that Ravens coach John Harbaugh didn't want the team to draft cornerback Jimmy Smith. To quote Peter King: "That story about John Harbaugh not wanting Jimmy Smith? Wrong. Totally wrong."

Just something to keep in mind here as well.

Well, considering they work for the same radio station, I guess we shouldn't be too surprised!

Tyrell Pryor and Vince Young. If they acquire them it's past present and future. If one gets injured they'll all know the system and approach the offense similar and if anyone can reach Vince its Mike.

I pretty much agree with you, Redwings.
Supposedly there's concern about finding an adequate backup once Kevin Kolb is traded (since Mike Kafka probably isn't ready or good enough yet), but frankly if Vick gets hurt it probably won't matter who the backup is.  But if it does matter, they can probably find one just as good as Favre at this point in their respective careers--and one who will cost them a lot less.
Eskin, a local talk show host, always says or implies that he has good sources within the Eagles' front office; the article cites at least one example where that wasn't true, and there are undoubtedly others.  In any event, however good or bad his Eagles sources may be, he doesn't have, or claim to have, inside sources at Favre's end.  And for some of the reasons you gave (aside from the fact that Favre really may want to stay retired this time), any supposed interest on the Eagles' part may be academic.

just for the sake of arguement.. whats so wrong with signing favre?? he obviously will always love the game of footbal,l so what better chance for him to remain close to the game than be a backup? especially in phila where vick is going to miss a few games next season. favre will be guarenteed a a few starts. andy reid was his qb coach and both have remained closed friends since andy left GB. he wouldnt demand that much money and the eagles are gonna to need a backup after trading kolb.. kafka isnt the answer. i think you ppl need to look it as a personel decision and realize its not as dumb as it sounds. it would benefit both favre and the eagles. one more thing, anthony gargano started this "favre to philly watch" about a month and a half ago.. eskin needs to stop vulturing stories.

That's not the real problem. Why would Farve come back as a backup? God CBS pull it together.

I'll be shocked beyond belief if the Eagles sign Favre. For one thing, why would Phili even want to sign Favre when Vick is coming off a great season and is guaranteed 16 million dollars for the 2011 season?  Favre would demand big money... he'll never play again if the money isn't right. So why would the Eagles pay their starter Vick 16 million and Favre a good 10 million to hold a clipboard?  Doesn't make sense, the NFL is a capped league.... from an organizational standpoint it's a stupid move.   Second of all why would Favre agree to back up Vick when there are probably at least a couple teams that would fight like hell to sign him, pay him big dollars and guarantee he starts every game?  None of this makes any sense to me... not one bit.

Anyway, I could care less if he comes back.  I think Brett Favre is all washed up..... he was great in his time but he's too old and too banged up to play in the NFL.   If he's going to play I hope it's for Minnesota though so the Detroit Lion's d line destroys him in at least 2 games this season..... it would be fun to watch.

i agree with you evadzed

i agree with evadzed.  there are way too many people on here criticizing favre.  he is a proven winner.  i know that a lot of you don't like him because he has changed his mind several times.  that only shows me that he has a love for the game and he doesn't want to leave it.  he simply loves the game!  he truly is great for the league.  this can be proven because anytime there is an article written about him there are a ton of responses.  i think a lot of you who criticize him are jealous because he can still play at an old age when a lot of you wished you could've played but weren't good enough!

I LOVE IT....BRETT FAVRE IS GREAT FOR THE N.F.L.

ONCE AGAIN..... FOR ALL OF YOU WHO ARE JEALOUS OF BRETT FAVRE AND WHO CONTINUE TO CRITICIZE HIM....... PISS ON ALL OF YOU!  I HOPE HE COMES BACK AND STICKS IT IN YOUR FACES.  THIS MAN IS GREAT FOR THE LEAGUE.  THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THIS ARTICLE IS THAT I DON'T WANT HIM GOING TO PHILLY..... STAY WITH THE VIKES!
