Ravens cut McGahee, Mason, Heap, Gregg?

There's a new CBA in town and that means that teams need to get up to the cap floor and also get below the new salary cap. The first victim of this movement? Willis McGahee of the Ravens, apparently.

Or formerly of the Ravens -- Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Monday afternoon that the Ravens have already informed McGahee that they plan on releasing him.

Of course, they can't actually do so until Thursday, July 28 at 4:00 p.m. ET. (I know this because I've been reading up on the league calendar!)

That the Ravens would dump McGahee was wholly expected -- he was due $6 million in 2011, and no one expected them to pay that much for a backup running back.

The good news for McGahee is that there's ample teams in the market for free-agent running backs, and he shouldn't go too long without some kind of employment.

UPDATED (5:49 P.M. ET): McGahee, it turns out, isn't the only unfortunate soul who will be cut Thursday. You can add Ravens NT Kelly Gregg to the list as well, though as Carroll County Times reporter Aaron Wilson reports, there's a chance Gregg could return to the team at a reduced salary.

The 34-year-old Gregg had two years left on his contract at $3.5 million per year.

UPDATE (7:10 P.M. ET): The Ravens are in full-on roster-slash mode apparently: according to reports from Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post and Jamison Henley of the Baltimore Sun, the team has also informed Derrick Mason and Todd Heap that they'll be cut.

Bring them back at a reduced salary? In the NFL you don't cut and resign you restructure. You don't insult a player by cutting him and then sign him for less. An answer may be they would not restructure, but to cut to resign is assinine.

Ravens cut McGahee, Mason, Heap, Gregg?

McGahee was expected. I also expected Derrick Mason because he was highly critical of play calling. Kelly Gregg, I didn't think he had that good of a year and he's getting up there in age. Todd Heap is a shocker. He had one of his best seasons of his career and stayed injury free for a good part of it. I would imagine that Heap, Mason and possibly Gregg would be brought back at a reduced salary.

Ravens cut McGahee, Mason, Heap, Gregg?

Mcgahee is a no brainer, but I am quite skeptical of a report that a team that benefitted more than most from the lockout (ie a veteran team with its pieces in place) would cut its top 2 receiving options. Boldin was a disaster last year and was outplayed by a long in the tooth, unretired, good but not great receiver in Mason. Heap is in the top third of TEs in the league when healthy and Flacco's best Red Zone target. I can understand injury concerns with Heap, but with no replacement on par with his ability you don't downgrade hamburger to horse meat when poised for a playoff run. Unless there is a play in the works for S Holmes, Mason can not be replaced through free agency, Boldin and Housh are more complimetary wideouts than outside number ones. I'll throw out a name; does James Jones get the chance to be the outside threat he's shown flashes of in a career in the shadow of Jennings and Driver?

I can see the other ones, but Heap? I know he is injured but their offense is much better with him in it. Good for the Steelers though. :-)

Ravens cut McGahee, Mason, Heap, Gregg?

The  have told former Pro Bowl tight end p that he'll be released.

General manager Ozzie Newsome gave Heap the bad news today, according to a league source.

Heap's pending release would save $4.6 million.

The Ravens drafted  and  last year.

Dickson seems to have the capability of becoming a full-time starter.

Heap was entering the final year of his contract.

Ravens cut McGahee, Mason, Heap, Gregg?

Aww....and Mason just got thru talking about how scared he is of the Ravens.

Gregg was always a guy I never liked facing but they do have Ngata.

Heap is done for anyway.

McGahee was a backup but McClain might also be gone.

Report: Ravens tell Willis McGahee he's released

AES it is league policy, what is not to understand? Waivers do not start till the 28th, hence it not being official till that point. Similar to trade deadlines and the like.
