Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

The NFL is pretty full of uncertainty these days. Unless you're Alex Smith, erstwhile starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

Because if you're Smith, now that the lockout's over, everything else is pretty much cream cheese. Or "set in stone," if you're not a big fan of Bobby Finstock motivational quotes.

"I'm not going to wait for anything," Smith said about signing with the 49ers, per Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. "I'm excited for this to start ... waiting for that opportunity.

"I'm sure it'll be pretty quick. I'm sure it'll move fast. It's pretty well set in stone, I think."

Smith declined to discuss whether or not any (hypothetical) contract with the 49ers would have a (hypothetical) option for a second year -- surely both sides would prefer that.

Smith would get a little more safety and if Jim Harbaugh can resurrect his career that quickly, the team won't get torched by having to give him a huge contract.

Worst case? It doesn't work out for either party and we're all left wondering "Who's the quarterback?" by midseason anyway.

Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

Hahahah - good luck with that number one over all pick next year niners - the new detriot.  The richest head coach to lose his job after two long losing years.  That's why this organization sucks and will always suck- clueless owner, clueless staff.

Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

This was always going to be a building year for the 49ers anyway.  Given the lockout-shortened nature of everything, might as well ease the transition by picking the guy familiar with the team.  It doesn't really matter who the QB is in the short term:  the future is Colin Kaepernick.

That said, I would have liked to have seen the team change direction (and I think Alex Smith needs a change of scenery to have any hope of a career), but it's not the end of the world.

Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

"i know alex smith is #11 (not in a quarterback's normal red jersey) but the pictute really looks like the player they are talking about is the guy in the backround (michael crabtree cheering for him?). if i didn't know better i would think alex smith was a black quarterback that wears number 15. you couldn't get a better picture?"
The only other photos available of Smith were of him under a pile of defensive bodies, 6 yards behind his OL.
If I were the 49ers I would take that "stone" with his name set in it and throw it across the bay.
Seriously, though, as the 49ers and Redskins are my most hated teams, I'm not complaining.

Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

I would rather see Brett Favre unretire for the 6,437th time and in a Niners uniform than see another year of Alex Smith. And did I mention that I hate Brett Favre?

Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

Ahh the hell with it!  I've watched Alex Smith for years now.  Sure he had a good year under Norv Turner before San Diego swiped him to be their head coach.  Since then he hasn't performed well as we've all seen.  That's a tough road to travel though.  Numerous offensive coordinators, a horrible line, no weapons, the reasons are there but a time comes when a QB matures within the game and makes the players around him better.  We haven't see that in Smith.  Now that his line is much improved from his first couple of years and weapons are maturing around him, he's still very inaccurate and performing far below par.

If the 49ers are going to sink another year or two into him why not just go out and sign Mike Sims-Walker, Malcolm Floyd, and Santonio Holmes to go with Davis, Crabtree, and Morgan and play the spread shotgun like Smith did in college where he had his best numbers???

Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

Alex Smith has gotten more 2nd chances than any player in the league (in terms of on field performance). I don't see what the 49ers still see in him.  Of the QB's on their roster last year I'd say Smith was the least attractive of the bunch. Troy Smith played pretty well and I'd think he'd be a better stop gap than Alex Smith. David Carr hasn't seen the field as a starter in some time, but looking at his body of work with Houston, I'd still think he is a better option than Smith. You have to figure the 49ers will go to camp with Colin Kaepernick, Alex Smith and some veteran/journeyman. I'd say they would be far better served to make a play for  Donovan McNabb, or Carson Palmer if the asking price isn't too high. Barring a total collapse I can't imagine them being in position to get Andrew Luck next year, so their actions are puzzling. The only logical reason for sticking with Alex SMith is the lack of time to get a new QB ready to play due to the short off season. Still if you gave me my choice I'd much rather have Troy Smith than Alex Smith.

Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

Signing Matt Hasselbeck would make the 49ers the preseason favorites to win the division. Alex Smith assures them of being underdogs.

Alex Smith's return to 49ers 'set in stone'

How many seasons will it take for the 49ers to realize this guy is terrible?!!?!?  I am a die-hard 49ers fan, I've watched the Alex Smith practice and play in preseason and regular season games.  He can't throw and accurate football!!!!  He is so bad its crazy.  Nothing can cure how bad he sucks! He was drafted in 2004, and we still have this bum on our team?!!!!!  And Colin Kaepernick is not the answer, he is awful too. The only explanation can be Harbough wants to go 2-14 so he can draft Andrew Luck.  This will be yet another year wasted as a 49ers fan.
