Yesterday, the Baltimore Ravens drew a ton of attention by slashing prices cutting a slew of veterans including Derrick Mason and Todd Heap. Tuesday, it was the Cowboys turn, as reports started flying that Dallas had cut wide receiver Roy Wiliams, offensive linemen Marc Colombo and Leonard Davis, kicker Kris Brown and running back Marion Barber.

None of the cuts were that surprising, particularly Barber and Williams, who seemed like likely targets to be cut when colleague Ryan Wilson wrote about the very subject just a few weeks ago.

Williams (who, by the way, just got some bling back after the most notorious mailed-wedding-ring incident of the entire offseason) makes sense as a roster expense, particularly because now the Cowboys will simply start Miles Austin and Dez Bryant, both of whom are better than Williams anyway.

Cowboys Offseason
And Barber's become the least effective back in Dallas' stable; even though Barber had more carries than Tashard Choice last season (113 to 66), he still on managed a feeble 3.3 yards per carry and an unimpressive 28.8 yards per game. Additionally, he found the end zone just four times.

The combination of just Barber and Williams will save the Cowboys nearly $10 million in terms of salary cap number, and it's become pretty clear -- based on all these cuts -- that they are in fact players in the Nnamdi Asomugha market this offseason.

Whether or not they land the coveted cornerback, though, they've probably made a slew of good roster decisions anyway.

Barber has already shown he can NOT handle carrying the load......If he gets more than 20 carries a game, he wears down....Evidence...the year they went 13-3 and lost to the Giants.....He was out of gas!!! Barber was most effective when he and Julius Jones (when he was there) shared the load, then Marion pounded it in the 4th when the D-line was tired... When he started carrying the load, that's when his injuries started

I understand people's take on Barber being able to help someone, I get that.  However, I read a Bill Simmons article the other day, you know a REAL columnist who now has his own website and he gave example after example after example of why you should never go after a veteran RB via trade, free agency etc.  The results are overwhelmingly poor.  Now adays the turnover is so fast on RBs I really just think people are looking at the name and not what they can really get outta the guy.  I'm a Bills fan, laugh....ok now that your done laughing, we drafted Willis McGahee, drafted Marshawn Lynch, drafted CJ Spiller all top picks and who of all of them has been a star for us.....Fred Jackson.  Point is, guys a lot of time want the glamour of a named guy like Roy Williams or Marion Barber when in reality they'd be better with a lesser named guy.

I was under the impression that Barber played hurt last year.  That's why his stats didn't look so good.  If he's healthy this year, he'll help somebody.  But the Cowboys are deep in running backs and have a salary cap problem.  Some expensive players had to go.  Barber runs better than Felix Jones in traffic, but Jones has more speed than Barber and more break away ability, and he is still young.

Roy Williams I get and really Marion Barber too.  Makes sense for Dallas.  But Barber will do some team a LOT of good this year.  Tough as nails.  Knows the game.  And has no quit in him.

Miami?  Jacksonville?  Carolina?  Kansas City?  Anybody watching?

Cut Kris Brown??? Can someone tell me when we signed him in the first place? Barber and Williams are let go and we actually improve at RB and WR, now that doesn't happen often

Hahahah, roy williams is being cut...That is why Jerry Jones is a A$$hole, Didn't they trade a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Williams.
Actually it was a 1st, 3rd, and 7th. They drafted Brandon Pettigrew with that pick. He is developing into one of the best tight ends in the league. He had 71 catches for 700+ yards and is an excellent blocker. They also got Derrick Williams. The jury is still out on him. And Dan Grankowski in the 7th. Pettigrew alone gives the Lions the edge in that trade.

I remember last year being somewhat unhappy at the fact that my Rams, under new ownership, failed to sign a veteran WR to aide the rookie QB and young receiving corp.  Hindsight is 20/20 and with free agency booming, I look forward to seeing who gets signed.  Last year, I was shocked that Reggie Williams didn't get a glance.  With Mason and Williams becoming free agents, the list of veteran WR's will be bountiful to choose from.  I'm only talking the receivers, because that's what it will take to allow Bradford to show his true potential and develop it.  I'd love to see Mason signed.  I'm shocked that the Ravens cut him, but cap room is cap room.  Or was it the signing of Torrey Smith?

I don't know why everyone is down on Barber. The guy is a certain type of back. He is a Steven Jackson style back. He needs 20+ carries a game to be effective. He's a one back system guy. If Jackson were to share carries he would have the same type of production. Heck we could of said the same thing about E.Smith. They are backs that wear down a defense and bust a couple. As for Williams.......good bye, that was always a horrible deal Jerry made. My question is what does everyone like about Felix Jones? Talk about over rated!
