If you thought the Carolina Panthers might sit on their laurels in free agency, well, whoops: less than a day after dropping a $76 million beast of a deal on defensive end Charles Johnson, the Panthers have reportedly signed running back DeAngelo Williams to a five-year, $43-million deal that features $21 million in guaranteed money.

"DeAngelo Williams is back #doubletrouble" Jonathan Stewart, Williams' backfield partner, tweeted shortly after Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network first reported the deal.

Williams, like Johnson, became an unrestricted free agent following the implementation of the new CBA rules and cashed in big-time with his hometown team on Wednesday.

Reports also indicate that the Denver Broncos and Williams' former coach John Fox were in heavy pursuit of the running back, but much like Johnson, it appears the Panthers were willing to pony up and keep him in-town.

The Panthers have also since signed kicker Olindo Mare to a four-year, $12 million deal and signed tight end Ben Hartsock. Yes, it's safe to say they're being a tad active this offseason.

These morons posting on here are hilarious - you have Rams fan talking about being in the cellar for years to come.  Hey Rams fan, the last time you were in the playoffs in 2003 we knocked you out.  Then you have a Colts fan saying we cannot run the ball.  Dude, the Colts have the worst rushing attack every year.

THE REASON why we so bad last year was QB play.  Our QB was awful so we could not thow and teams would just stack the box against the run.  Our defense, which was actually decent, was on the field all game long.  In the 2008 and 2009 seasons we had hands down the best running tandem in the league with Williams and Stewart.  Now add Mike Goodson and Cam Newton to the mix and it is definitely the best running team in the league.

I'm not saying the Panthers are playoff bound or anything but we will rebuild quickly and be in contention for the division by 2013.  I think it's funny how short people's memories are - the Panthers were a #2 seed in the 2008-2009 season.  It's not like we have ever been the freaking Browns, Bills, Bengals, Raiders, etc.

You obviously aren't very knowledgable about The National Football League.   It's VERY rare to see one back as your primary carrier on any team.  16 weeks will wear out any postion you play in football, but especially the RB position.
I wouldn't call 1/3 of the teams "very rare", in fact I would call it 1/3.  Knowledgable lol.

DeAngelo Hall is a very good running back when he is healthy. The Panthers may think he's worth it, but with Jonathan Stewart in the mix, I'm not sure I get this move. He's good, but 43 million? And then they pay 12 million to Olindo Mare. I guess the Panthers will score more field goals than anything, so maybe it's not so bad. Lots of money being spent...we'll see what happens.

I think that the Broncos may have forced the Panthers' hand in offering Williams that much money. I know that he's a good back but he's been dealing with several injuries over the past few years and he might not be with the Panthers by the time that his contract is over with, but if he can get that amount of $$$.....more power to him!!!!

The comments from fans that know nothing about our team is funny...

How can a Rams fan talk?? really like they just didnt have the #1 pick last yr..lol

Anyway im glad as a Panther fan DeAngelo Williams is back with the team he is one of the best RBs in the NFL and is the best RB on the team, J-Stew is a great RB too but Williams is alittle better. And to all the people saying why, why, why becouse just maybe why RBs have short careers is becouse all the hits they take. By having two great RBs ether that you can have in the game you have no dropoff in talent when one goes to the sidelines and you keep both fresh the whole game.

Lets not act like Goodson is anywhere near Williams league as far as a RB he is good, but not a top 10 RB. The Panthers have the cap room and unlike the Redskins they are spending money on there own players and not every top FA from other teams that you hope will fit your system. The Panthers had two of the top players at there spots hit FA so why not spend to keep your good players??

Wow.  I haven't seen reckless spending like this Dan Synder bought the Redskins.  The Panthers are making congress look like spendthrifts.

Very happy Panther fan... Dude is one of top RB's in the NFL, they shut him down last year to save him, the Panthers had no passing game and a hurt o-line, DW = STUD, double trouble is back If Otah can stay healthy and we can get any thing at QB the Panthers will be back to being one of the better teams in the NFL
