If you thought the Carolina Panthers might sit on their laurels in free agency, well, whoops: less than a day after dropping a $76 million beast of a deal on defensive end Charles Johnson, the Panthers have reportedly signed running back DeAngelo Williams to a five-year, $43-million deal that features $21 million in guaranteed money.

"DeAngelo Williams is back #doubletrouble" Jonathan Stewart, Williams' backfield partner, tweeted shortly after Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network first reported the deal.

Williams, like Johnson, became an unrestricted free agent following the implementation of the new CBA rules and cashed in big-time with his hometown team on Wednesday.

Reports also indicate that the Denver Broncos and Williams' former coach John Fox were in heavy pursuit of the running back, but much like Johnson, it appears the Panthers were willing to pony up and keep him in-town.

The Panthers have also since signed kicker Olindo Mare to a four-year, $12 million deal and signed tight end Ben Hartsock. Yes, it's safe to say they're being a tad active this offseason.

DeAngelo signs $43M deal with Panthers

Did you.  The Panthers had NO QB and half of the line was hurt.  There were 9 guys in the box on every play.  the one deep safety rolled to S. Smith and there was nothing we could do.  I belive and have for some time that John Fox was the problem on this team.  We went through 3 OC's and the game plan never changed.  Why have we never had D Will and J. Stewart on the field at the same time, why have we never had a TE or RB catch more that 25 balls, because Fox and we will see what happens this year, but i am betting we had more talent that our past few seasons.

Report: DeAngelo signs $43M deal with Panthers

Damn i was hoping the Giants picked him up after bradshaw leaves but now that hes gone i hope bradshaw gets inked up. I feel as though the Giants will not pay bradshaw the kind of money some other teams will offer and what hes looking for. It would be great to keep them both but i truly feel Giants RB's are overated because of their offensive line being so good. We will se this year how the RB's perform with Shaun O'Hara and Rich Seuburt both gone and young healthy guys replacing them. I can see those yellow flags flying already lol. The OT Will Beatty will get his chance to step up. LETS GOOO BLUUEEEEEE

Report: DeAngelo signs $43M deal with Panthers

You couch monkeys need to give it a rest.  The Panthers were over 50 million under the cap and have to spend that money somewhere.  They have said all along that they are going the route of GB and Pittsburg and retain their talet.  So now they do with frontloaded contracts and you can't comprehend why they are doing it.  Charles Johnson is 25 years old and is a pass rusher so he was going to get paid somewhere and D Will is 28 and still has miles left on his tires, and add that to the fact that J. Stewart has had Toe issues the last three years, and we need a good ground game to help protect whoever is our QB and it makes sence.  Now sign T. Davis and then see what you have left and pick up some pieces and things will be moving in the right direction.

This move just is why Carolina never gets better! They been trying to have someone replace this guy for years. Now you have a Stewart who is a starting NFL runningback and you give Williams 43 million. Now I feel he is worth the money but raises some questions. Is he your workhorse or is he sharing carries for 43 million with Stewart. Both answers don't really seem good for panthers. If he splits carries alot of moneyhas been wasted and could have been put to use to address other needs. If he doesn't split carries you wasted a high draft pick again to fill a spot you didn't need. Plus what do you do with Stewart now?

DeAngelo is part of the best running back tandem in football

Did you watch the NFL at all last season?  These guys may have been good a couple of years ago, but DeAngelo was mediocre until his injury (just ask any FF player how many games they lost when starting him), Stewart absolutely sucked, and the only bright spot was a couple of surprising games by Mike Goodson.

Carolina can't run the ball.  At all.  DeAngelo might be good, but he's only as good as his offensive line, which is horrible.

He's not worth all that money.... I don't see why these teams are signing players to that type of money 1good not Great season to sign guys to big money, unless he's a Barry Sanders type. ?????????

Ignore my previous comment, everyone. I'd read somewhere else that DeAngelo HALL had signed for $21 Million guaranteed.

My bad.

I'm sure you'll be very happy with DeAngelo Williams.

@RaiderDuck: Um, you do know that this contract is for DeAngelo Williams, the running back, and not DeAngelo Hall, the cornerback, right? Williams has never played for anyone but the Panthers while Hall has been passed around the league, including a stint with the Raiders.

It is a five year contract with only twenty-one million guaranteed.  DeAngelo is part of the best running back tandem in football.  He splits time with Stewart and yet he led the league in rushing touchdowns a couple of years ago.  You have to hold on to this guy and they have locked him up for his best years.  The Charles Johnson signing has to be a bigger question.
