Donovan McNabb trade to Vikings 'done'

At various points on Tuesday and Wednesday, Donovan McNabb was as good as gone from Washington, borne out into the great midwest to mentor Christian Ponder with the Vikings, as first reported by CBSSports.com's own Mike Freeman.

But there was a little matter of McNabb agreeing to changing up his contract, since Minnesota obviously wasn't going to give him eight figures to do so.

That issue appears to have been cleared though, and the McNabb-to-Minny deal is "now official."

That's according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, who reported Wednesday that the deal is "done" and will be announced on Thursday.

A league source has confirmed the report to Freeman as well.

There haven't been precise details of the trade released yet, but it stands to reason that, as we previously noted, the Redskins will still receive a pair of sixth-round picks in return for McNabb.

Given that near-sickening drop in value, it's hard to imagine that McNabb will be getting all that much money from the Vikings just to play the role of mentor. But then again, he's out of Washington so whatever he had to give up is probably worth it.

McNabb goes from one mediocre team to another mediocre team. This may be his last stop.

The Vikings traded for McNabb, hoping he'll do what Favre did in his first year there. I guess I can understand that, but McNabb is no Favre. Probably the real reason is they drafted a rookie and with the lockout would be going into the season rushing along a QB who quite frankly was chosen too high. Anyone who saw Ponder play @ FSU knows how flawed his game was at that level. Imagine him going up againat the Pack, Bears and that emerging Detroit defense? Not even Odin could save him.

So McNabb becomes the transitional guy. Minny has a great RB in Peterson and a good defense. Ironically, they lost their star receiver to Seattle where there ex-back-up may start. McNabb better get use to hitting his TE a lot and handing the ball to Peterson. that may be their best shot at having a winning season.

The Pack are the class of that division and the Bears did make the NFC title game. The Lions are vastly improved as well. Minny may be in for a long year and McNabb may end his career similar to how Favre ended his. the only differences are Favre had a ring and is a legend.

I hope Donovan avoids that and has a good year. I've always liked him since his days @ Syracuse. I just think time has passed him by and the end is near.

Nobody for him to pass to. And please, do not even try to tell me Percy Harvin. As if he is a solid number one WR...

McNabb is a gamer, much like Hasselbeck. These kind of guys you simply don't show the door to an outhouse. They have respect and leadership qualities. McNabb is a great fit for Minny as Hasselbeck is for Titans. Any QB with leadership qualities should be given the reigns to teach the younguns how to manage a game and team for a year or two. Much like Kerry Collins helped Vince Young, NO WAIT!

But he just lost one of thier best recievers - Sidney Rice. Then, again, he still has Harvin and Shiancoe. Not to mention Adrian Peterson (when he can hang on to the ball).

Donovan McNabb for two sixth round picks and a reduced salary for McNabb? This was a no brainer for the Vikings. They are not loaded this year to make a deep run anyway, in my opinion, so bring in the old guy and see if he has anything left to help us. If he doesn't, pull him and let him work with Christian Ponder. There is no downside for the Vikings on this trade.

McNabb isn't very good anymore, but because the Vikings have good talent other than at the QB position, if he can just minimize mistakes and morph into a decent game manager, it would be an OK move for Minnesota. They didn't give up much...of course that's because McNabb isn't worth much anymore. But he might be a serviceable bridge to C. Ponder.

Great Move for the Vikings!  McNabb career TDs-Int 230-115, Farve carreer TDs-Int 508-336.  Vikes Fans give Donovan a chance and maybe he can have the Cinderella Season Favre had in 2009!  Also McNabb tore us up 5 out of 6 times we played him, the man has skill and if he has gas in the tank will lead us back to the playoffs.   Now the Vikings need to get Malcolm Floyd to go down field!!!
