Report: Asomugha down to Jets, Cowboys

Asomugha

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

While the Texans grabbed Johnathan Joseph and the Steelers re-upped with Ike Taylor, knocking two of the three most-coveted free agent cornerbacks off the market, we’re still waiting to see where the most-expensive of them all, Nnamdi Asomugha, will sign.

The original thought(s) were the Texans, the Jets and the 49ers. Then, as Houston took on Joseph on Thursday night, it became the Jets, the 49ers (and maybe the Buccaneers, the Cowboys and the Raiders (!)). All were rumors, and supposedly, there was a chance it would be resolved late Thursday night or early Friday morning*.

*Luckily, this didn’t happen while the Eye on Football blog was catching a few hours of shut-eye.

Apparently, it’s now down to two teams. As NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reports, Asomugha will sign either with the Jets or the Cowboys, and some believe Dallas actually is the favorite.

This will be the first big competitive test for New York coach Rex Ryan and his brother, Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, since Ryan took over the Cowboys job. It adds a little bit of intrigue to a situation that continues to be one of the most interesting storylines of the new NFL season.

Who can afford to sign and pay a guy who will probably command at least $15 million a year?

Jets CB Darrelle Revis obviously would love to have the second-best CB in the league playing opposite of him, and Jets QB Mark Sanchez has intimated that he (and maybe some of his teammates) would be willing to restructure his contract in order to land a big free agent.

The Cowboys, while way over the salary cap limit at the beginning of the season, has been dumping big-salaried players since Tuesday in an effort to sign a high-impact player.

My guess: the Jets still have the upper-hand. But with Jerry Jones always looking to get what he wants, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Asomugha end up in Dallas.

"Yes where a state is run without the need to tax the crap out of the residents, and there are actually jobs...such a horrible fate"

Too hot.  No good delis.  Ugly hats.  Weak theater and media.  Coaching carousel.   If he like bbq, which is pretty awesome down there, then good for him.

You can bet this dude's agent is burning up the phone lines and driving up the price for the last stud DB in free agency.

If Ndami is interested in a ring, he would pick the Jets. He may get more money from the Cowboys, though, as the Jets cannot go too much higher than Revis' salary without creating internal problems.

Rex & Co. vs. Jerry Jones in a battle of high profile team uber-egos. Who will land the prize?

With endorsements he would earn more in NY - taxes or no taxes.  Keep in mind, he wants to be an actor when his career is over.  Dallas can not offer him what NY can relative to acting/endorsements.  Including the success the J-E-T-S have had over the last couple of years, along with the failures Dallas has had, the choice of NY is a no brainer.  The Jets will have the "No Fly Zone"!

dilfer won with the ravens, sick defense, brad johnson won with the bucs great defense. A great defense will always beat a great offense. Sanchez isnt great but he's better than those to guys and if the jets get Asomugha it will be a big boost for their style defense. Stop all Jet hating there cocky attitude makes football fun, there nothing wrong with talking a little trash. To all the Jets haters "Suck it". Go JETS!!!!!!!!!!

Huh??? When was the last time the Cowboys were a champion when the season was over! Makes more sense to join the team that has made the AFC title game the last 2 seasons and not the team that missed the playoffs all together. Cowboy fans are worse than Heat fans!

But thankfully not worse than Steeler or the sudden influx of Packer fans...

The Jets would have to pay Nmandi more than Revis and Revis is arguably better than him.  I wonder how that will go over?

LOL, not too well and probably not too smart either.

Also, can Asomugha play both sides?

Yes, but he'd still be in Texas.

The smart move would be Jets! Of course Jerry will write a big check but the team success and large market that he would see in NY would balance out the big check!
