Report: Asomugha down to Jets, Cowboys

Asomugha

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

While the Texans grabbed Johnathan Joseph and the Steelers re-upped with Ike Taylor, knocking two of the three most-coveted free agent cornerbacks off the market, we’re still waiting to see where the most-expensive of them all, Nnamdi Asomugha, will sign.

The original thought(s) were the Texans, the Jets and the 49ers. Then, as Houston took on Joseph on Thursday night, it became the Jets, the 49ers (and maybe the Buccaneers, the Cowboys and the Raiders (!)). All were rumors, and supposedly, there was a chance it would be resolved late Thursday night or early Friday morning*.

*Luckily, this didn’t happen while the Eye on Football blog was catching a few hours of shut-eye.

Apparently, it’s now down to two teams. As NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reports, Asomugha will sign either with the Jets or the Cowboys, and some believe Dallas actually is the favorite.

This will be the first big competitive test for New York coach Rex Ryan and his brother, Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, since Ryan took over the Cowboys job. It adds a little bit of intrigue to a situation that continues to be one of the most interesting storylines of the new NFL season.

Who can afford to sign and pay a guy who will probably command at least $15 million a year?

Jets CB Darrelle Revis obviously would love to have the second-best CB in the league playing opposite of him, and Jets QB Mark Sanchez has intimated that he (and maybe some of his teammates) would be willing to restructure his contract in order to land a big free agent.

The Cowboys, while way over the salary cap limit at the beginning of the season, has been dumping big-salaried players since Tuesday in an effort to sign a high-impact player.

My guess: the Jets still have the upper-hand. But with Jerry Jones always looking to get what he wants, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Asomugha end up in Dallas.

Crib you're joking right. Shutting down Johnson twice. I'm pretty sure I could have done that to a 33 wr and a washed up Carson Palmer. You should look up the real stats. Not the box score at the end of the day. Don't assume that if Brandon Marshall had a 100 yds and a td that Nnamdi covered the entire game. The Raiders heirarchy don't always let Nnamdi cover the best wr the entire game. Stupid I know, but that's the Raiders.

while I would hate to see him go to either of these teams as I detest them both - I admire the fact that they recognize what a contributer he would be - Jets need to get past NE, PIT, SD, IND to make the SB and DAL needs to survive PHI, NYG and of course GB and NO - 7 of the 8 teams I listed have top notch passing games.

I don't understand why Tampa isn't getting involved though - I believe at this point that have more cash to spend than anyone; they're a borderline playoff team that's improving and play in a division with Brees and Ryan - he'd be a perfect fit for them. I'd be going full tilt if I were TB.

Its a done deal.  If Jerry really wants someone, he will find a way to get him.  Jerry has to stay in the limelight and what better way, right?  They will reshape Romo, Austin and a few others contracts and cut Newman to get Asomugha, but it will happen....You watch.

@maise, Safety Leonard is healthy as well as LB Harris, not so sure Harris is happy, with the Jets throwing around all this cash, and he still has a one yr deal as the Jets franchise player.

@Maxbuster, I would rather be in thr final four every year than win the division,

I have a feeling the Jets are gonna lose out on Assie and then resign Cro and Edwards.

Don't go the Dallas Crapboys. That would be a horrible mistake. The Cowboys are not a good team, and only have one good player on defense. That linebacker guy( Ware) other than that, Asomugha will be he only player on the field trying to make a play. I am not watching football anymore if the Cowboys, pick up the best FA player....then we all know that the NFL is fixed and that upper management ( Goodell) had a hand in making sure one of the most popular teams, got the best player......FIXED!!!!

LOL, Oh no, another 4Whiner's fan gone.......  The world just got infinitely better.....

As I have said on another post Michael Lombardi is a fool. He was interviewed for the 49ers GM position and told everyone that he was the frontrunner and that he felt that he would be their next GM...he wasn't. Then he says that the Texans were definitely going to sign Nnamdi Asomugha, but then they signed another CB. The Eagles and Cowboys don't make sense for Asomugha because they are not very stable teams. Yes, they might have won more games than the 49ers in the past 10 years, but it seems that these three teams are all on the same situation. They will never get past the "hump" until they get a capable coach. Andy Reid is not a capable coach. The guy has only taken the Eagles to the Super Bowl one time and the Cowboys always seem to fold in the playoffs. But as they all say "It's all about the money!" and those teams seems to be offering the most. But I still think that if the 49ers offer up $20-25 Asomugha will take it. Like all former Raiders he would want to show Al Davis that he can win without him.....and there is no better place than right across the Bay. Besides, we have seen a slew of 49er greats come play for the Raiders....it's about time some Raider greats come play for the 49ers..I'm just saying.

If the Jets get him, there will eventually be trouble.  Whoever gets paid less will not be able to deal with it (especially if its Revis).

But if they do pick him up, its maybe the 2nd best CB pairing in the last 40 years (behind Mike Haynes and Lester Hayes).  Good for the defense coached by a creative mind.  However, keep in mind that New England makes adjustments and they use the TE a lot.  They may just figure out a way to punish the Jets interior pass defense with TE play and slot receivers.  How is that injured Jet Safety doing?  Is David Harris healthy and happy?  They'd better be ready because I bet Brady attacks the middle third of the field with the pass, and attacks the edges with the run.

If Dallas gets him, I just hope all those vets they cast loose don't end up back with the boys at vet minimums.  That would figure.  Only Dallas and NE could get away with that sort of stuff...

Jerry will sign him, that may be the last major piece for the Cowboys.
