Report: Asomugha down to Jets, Cowboys

Asomugha

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

While the Texans grabbed Johnathan Joseph and the Steelers re-upped with Ike Taylor, knocking two of the three most-coveted free agent cornerbacks off the market, we’re still waiting to see where the most-expensive of them all, Nnamdi Asomugha, will sign.

The original thought(s) were the Texans, the Jets and the 49ers. Then, as Houston took on Joseph on Thursday night, it became the Jets, the 49ers (and maybe the Buccaneers, the Cowboys and the Raiders (!)). All were rumors, and supposedly, there was a chance it would be resolved late Thursday night or early Friday morning*.

*Luckily, this didn’t happen while the Eye on Football blog was catching a few hours of shut-eye.

Apparently, it’s now down to two teams. As NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reports, Asomugha will sign either with the Jets or the Cowboys, and some believe Dallas actually is the favorite.

This will be the first big competitive test for New York coach Rex Ryan and his brother, Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, since Ryan took over the Cowboys job. It adds a little bit of intrigue to a situation that continues to be one of the most interesting storylines of the new NFL season.

Who can afford to sign and pay a guy who will probably command at least $15 million a year?

Jets CB Darrelle Revis obviously would love to have the second-best CB in the league playing opposite of him, and Jets QB Mark Sanchez has intimated that he (and maybe some of his teammates) would be willing to restructure his contract in order to land a big free agent.

The Cowboys, while way over the salary cap limit at the beginning of the season, has been dumping big-salaried players since Tuesday in an effort to sign a high-impact player.

My guess: the Jets still have the upper-hand. But with Jerry Jones always looking to get what he wants, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Asomugha end up in Dallas.

I like how people think no one will throw on the Jets if they get Asomugha... dink and dunks can still get the job done, throw on the safeties.  Jets would be better off getting a good pass rusher.

Huh??? When was the last time the Cowboys were a champion when the season was over! Makes more sense to join the team that has made the AFC title game the last 2 seasons and not the team that missed the playoffs all together. Cowboy fans are worse than Heat fans!

Does that make JETS worse than Heat fans as Heat made championship game while JETS didn't (twice in a row almost) (Actually 43 in a row).

Jets becoming poorman McNabb's Eagles (ok 3 less conference championship and one less super bowl appearance)...maybe one day can strive to become like Kelly’s. Bills

Cowboys/Giants have had dynasties and may again.   JETS can only dream. And talk a lot of trash

This guy is just playing both teams for the highest possible salary.  I think Dallas is the favorite as they can commit more to him and are a very good playoff team.  They also have a history with having a top CB and utilizing them correctly.

The Jets already have a #1CB and it would be kind of dumb to break the bank for another one.  Asomugha is full of crap in his claims he wants to play for the Jets or with Revis, he's just looking to get paid.  Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't make sense for the Jets if they're going to overpay.

if ASOMUGHA is as good as they are saying ... and the JETS do land him ....NO TEAM is going to be able to throw on them ... this pick up will trump the PAT's(the JET's only competitors in the conference)  getting OCHOCINCO .... barring any injuries or a complete meltdown by the JET offense they will make the playoffs for a third year .... i can foresee the offense scoring just as many or even more points in the 2011 season than they did in the 2010 season just by the simple fact that they are a year more mature ... plus they dont have the distraction of HBO being in camp ...
as for the cowboys ....they will never win another championship as long as jerry jones is the owner .....he is just like al davis ....stay in your skybox where u belong not on the field ......

If he signs with the Cowboys, he is going to be miserable. The knock on Dallas's defense is that they really are not good against the pass. Not only that, Jerry Jones is a virus to his team. Now on to the Jets side, he gets to play against another top CB in Revis, and the defense is there. If he wants to be an actor after he retires, then NY is the best place for him. Dallas will definately offer him the most money, but the Jets will give him the best chance to win a ring. He is already 30 years old, meaning his time is closer tot he end, than the beginning and a guys like him, deserves to have a ring.
