Cam Newton signs $22M guaranteed contract

Cam Newton, the Panthers No. 1-overall draft pick, has signed his contract, and will make more than $22 million over four years, all of which is guaranteed.

Bus Cook, Newton's agent, told the The Associated Press via a text message Friday night that the deal was for four years and "$22 million-plus."

That's according to our Carolina Rapid Reporter Steve Reed, who cites a source close to the negotiations.

Newton, who played one year at Auburn before turning pro, will make substantially less than last year's top pick, Sam Bradford made. Like, a lot less: Bradford signed a deal for $78 million over six years.

But that money, freed up by new CBA rules governing rookie salaries, also allowed the Panthers to go out and sign some of their bigger names -- Charles Johnson, DeAngelo Williams -- in free agency.

Newton was seen Friday evening driving into the back lot of the Richardson Physical Activities Building and entering the offices that serve as team headquarters for Carolina's training camp at Wofford College.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera had said earlier Friday that he expected the former Auburn quarterback to be at Wofford when Carolina held its first practice session on Saturday. Also earlier Friday, general manager Marty Hurney said the sides were making good progress on an agreement.
Free Agency Frenzy

It's a testament to Jerry Richardson's involvement with the CBA that Carolina was able to pull off such moves; it's highly unlikely he would have drafted Newton if he'd thought that the quarterback would make the type of money that previous top-selected quarterbacks did.

Instead, the Panthers were able to not only pick up a potential franchise quarterback -- who, admittedly, has boom-or-bust potential -- but also reload their roster with the top talent that appeared to be headed elsewhere.

That might not ease the pain of losing $30 million in guaranteed money for Newton, but it'll at least ease his transition into the NFL.

"I don't think it's going to be a problem for me. I think it's just timing more than anything," Newton said last May. "Just repetition as far as me knowing what I have to do, knowing the assignment, the alignment and what everybody's doing on that particular play."

Newton has had Chudzinski's playbook since April 29, when a judge temporarily lifted the lockout. Panthers receiver Steve Smith said he was impressed with Newton's skills he saw during private workouts the two have had before labor peace was reached.

Another Panthers rookie from Auburn, receiver Darvin Adams, called Newton a "natural born leader."

Newton will be looked at to bring stability to a position where the Panthers struggled greatly last season. Carolina was last in several NFL categories and finished with the fewest points in team history.

Rivera said Newton would battle for the starting job with the quarterbacks in camp, last year's starter Jimmy Clausen and Tony Pike. General manager Marty Hurney didn't rule out bringing a veteran quarterback to add depth during camp.

Cam Newton signs $22M guaranteed contract

a 28 year-old running back (though they have two other identical style runningbacks already)
Other than being completely wrong, this sentence is actually totally spot on. Deangelo Williams is a shifty, open space guy and Jonathan Stewart is a one cut, hit the hole hard back. Your right, totally the same. Charles Johnson put up good numbers as a rotation guy before his big numbers last year (First as a starter). And Beason is the best middle linebacker not named Willis in the league (or at least in the argument). And please dont say Vilma. No disrespect to him, as he's very good, but theres a couple guys between him and Beason. I would like to defend Cam Newton but, im not THAT much of a homer. All I can say is we'll see.

With that said, the Saints are still gonna own us for quite a few years to come. Happy?

Cam Newton signs $22M guaranteed contract

First off yes we all know he is a rookie. I'm not expecting him to turn our team around over night, but if he does more power to him. But JaMarcus Russell he is not, thankfully, Russell ate like Right Guard at the all you can eat steak buffet, wasn't fast, or even smart. Heck Vince Young's wonderlick test painted him out to be just above the average mentally challenged person. So at the very least I know Cam Newton is smarter then those two busts. He does have a strong arm, and does throw some...'eh what was that?' passes, but now this is important, unlike Russell, Cam's leadership ability has been highly touted. And so friggin' what he has an attitude, IMHO it's a good attitude to say "I want to be an Icon" so long as he backs it up. As far as I care he can wear sunglasses at night, put a fur coat over his jersey, and diamond stud his uniform, so long as he walks the walk. A bad attitude would be "I don't want to be drafted by a bad team...waahhhhha uh waaahhha" *cough*Eli*cough*Manning*cough**cou

I like the Big Ben comparsions I've read because honestly the Steelers and Bill Cowher for that matter would have never sniffed the Lombardi trophy without him. Personally if he is as much of a goof as he seems to be, he might be the next Brett Farve. Which again, makes the Panthers playoff team overnight. *got fingers crossed, but not holding breath either*

Now, if he goes out there and pulls a Ryan Leaf, first few years of his career Drew Brees, Matt Lienart, Clausen, Quinn, etc.etc. then yeah, we can talk bust.

Cam Newton signs $22M guaranteed contract

Hadn't heard from scruffy in a while.

I don't really care whether he is a Russell clone or not, but even with this new deal, still seems overpaid for someone who hasn't played a down of NFL football, but I guess it would have been worse otherwise.

Skreffy - Are you still made at what Cam did to LSwho?

What's up w/ this?  "He is a faster Jamarcus Russel with a weaker arm, but essentially the same player.  They both used superior size to dominate in college.  At the NFL level that advantage is negated, and you are simply left with a guy who has thrown the ball maybe 8 times a game in college who relied more on the surprise factor (wow, he didn't run!) than accuracy to make those completions".

Cam had better passing stats than Russel did in his last year at LSU.  Not sure where the 8 passes a game came from (let me know if you need me to post both of their passing stats here to remind you).  As far a rushing stats go - you don't want me to post those stats (as you know, over 200 of those yards on the ground came against LSU).

Cam did much more while surrounded by less talent (at least at the WR position, AU definitely wins the tailback comparison).

Drink a beer & relax - Cam's twice the athlete that Russel ever was & Russel was throwing to Dwayne Bowe & Craig Davis (both WR's also drafted in the first round).

Cam Newton signs $22M guaranteed contract

First off he is a rookie. There will be mistakes made.  Let's wait and see what he does first.  Don't be fulled into thinking just because he was drafted #1 he is going to come out and play Manning or Brady.  He will come out and play just like Manning did in his rookie year,  like crap but look at him now.  Cam got a lot of money and he will start because of it so it's a good thing they re-signed Williams and Smith at least.Cool

Difference between him and Luck.

Luck isn't a douche
Luck knows how to pass the ball
Luck can play under center
Luck has a much better arm
Luck doesn't make some of those lame duck lobs we saw from Newton.

Cam Newton signs $22M guaranteed contract

You bloggers out there who are dis-sing Cam Newton should please understand this.  The guy is 6-5 and 250 pounds. He has 4.6 to 4.7 40 yard speed.  He has shown that he is durable on the field.
JaMarcus also has some nice measurables.

he was a man against children on the NCAA football field
So was Russell, Bush, White, Leinart, and Young in COLLEGE.

Newton cannot pass, he throws. He is not a great leader with his attitude problem. He does not have good foot work. He never played in a pro style offense. Lots of reason to be skeptical.
