Plaxico breakfasts with Steelers

BurressPosted by Josh Katzowitz

Since free agent Plaxico Burress was released from prison, there has been no shortage of rumors of where the 34-year-old ultimately could resume his career.

Would it be his old team, the Giants? Apparently, they’re interested. The Bears? Not so much. The Eagles? Michael Vick certainly wouldn’t mind that. The Jets? Sounds like they might take a shot at him.

Well, what about the Steelers? If Burress’ eating habits are any indication, it sounds like Pittsburgh is a real player to land Burress.

According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Ed Bouchette, Burress had breakfast with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on Saturday morning. Burress also met with team president Art Rooney and GM Kevin Colbert, who drafted Burress in 2000 (in case you forgot, Burress played his first five seasons in the league with the Steelers).

Said Colbert to reporters: “Obviously he's interested. His agent is interested and we're interested, so where it goes we'll find out.”

Colbert said he didn’t know how much money Burress would command, but if his expectations aren’t too high -- and coming off his prison stint, I don’t know why they would be -- Burress could be a nice fit to build some depth at the WR position.

All of this depends on how much solid football Burress actually has left in his body. Which, of course, nobody knows at this point.

I guess this means the Steelers have finally given up on Limas Sweed.  If he had worked out they would have the best set of receivers in the game.

Plaxico is a nice fit here with the Steelers. Gives big Ben a big target, just what he needs. Letting Holmes leave for the Jets was a mistake. Plaxico would fix some of that. Also his verticle presense would help the run game. Good luck to a kid that did a dumb thing and paid his price.

Plaxico breakfasts with Steelers

NEGivn: Haha...Plaxico breakfast has turned into 2 guys arguing about the American Gov't ...He may have been out of line, but there are many Americans who are.. as you call it.. "anti-america". That doesn't mean they are less american...just means they aren't homers and believe in hearing both sides of the story.  That's just how it is, people have opinions. As a Canadian Steelers fan of 20 plus years, I too keep an open mind, and realize not everything the Steelers say or do is the right move. There at least 50% of NFL players who don't always do the right thing. I'm just looking forward to September and another great year in the NFL. Can't believe the Plaxico Burress breakfast has turned into political nonsense. Read the headline!

NEgivnsundae, question the government and thinking for yourself is the most democratic thing for a person to do. i'm not american, but if that makes me anti american then you caught me. i think hes wrong, and i know several people who lost their lives that day. i saw the second tower fall personally, not on TV. but i also dont think its right to celebrate the death of another man, regardless of who it is.

A Giants team employee tweeted that Plax left New Jersey with a firm offer. Then the tweet was deleted.

With the Giants, Burress would be surrounded with a capable corps of receivers, much more so than in his previous turn with them. NOBODY, not even the Eagles - if they resign Samuels too - can cover a 4-wide set with Burress on the edge or coming back on a deep curl. Burress has to know that working with a QB like Eli Manning, whom he already knows, gives his 34-year-old body the best chance of being productive for an entire season.

Unless the discussion with Tom Coughlin went really off the rails, there should be a ton of incentives in Plaxico's contract that he can easily pick up. I'm sure he's looking for years and guarantees, btuit's unlikely that nobody will offer more than a Giants team that knows him better than anybody and who have a very strong locker room to help keep him on the straight and narrow.

Jerry Reese is also admittedly a Plaxico Burress fan and whatever else happened last night, Burress got some love from Reese.

With the tweets, the general thesis of his statements was that people shouldn't be celebrating over the loss of human life as though it is some profound revelation of human existence.  And I agree with him.  People were out partying and running thru the streets that Bin Laden was dead.  But these are all the same "good Christians" who are expected to live by His word and treat neighbors, and enemies, like their brothers.  I'm Christian, and I do what I can to live by the Word.  And like all others I've faltered along the way.  But I wasn't among those celebrating the loss of human life.

With regard to the suggesting the American government did it, I wonder if you really read the tweets.  He said: "We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style."  I wouldn't exactly say he's expressly stating that the American government was involved.  But this thing has been twisted and spun so many ways (and by Mendenhall himself) that there's no way to know at this point.

And as for saying I'll defend anything any Steeler says (and calling me an idiot, when I and others tend to regard me as one of the more realistic and level-headed Steelers fans on these boards) maybe you should read some of my other comments about the Steelers.  Or see what I wrote (literally) in the first of my posts on this thread.  I said they have idiots (and I forgot to throw Mendenhall in there because I forgot about his "the NFL is slavery" tweets), but they typically get rid of the 'actual' criminals on the teams.  And the Mendenhall tweets have been far overblown.  But haters are going to hate and run with it as far as they can.  This isn't even me being a Steeler fan (considering of my Pittsburgh teams they are at the bottom of the list, so I'm just a casual fan who actually knows what the hell is going on).  This is me being a sane, logical, un-biased person.
