WR Brandon Marshall, while one of the most talented players in the league, has always been a problem child in the NFL.

Now, we might have a reason why Marshall can’t seem to stay out of his own way. According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Omar Kelly, Marshall has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

You’ll recall that the Broncos had to jettison him to the Dolphins, and while in Miami, he’s ripped his starting QB and admitted to changing play-calls. Curiously, he’s also talked about trying to play in the NBA.

He also was allegedly stabbed by his wife in the offseason, but then told police he wasn’t stabbed even though we’re all pretty sure he actually was.

Generally, he’s been a nuisance wherever he’s played, and that always seems to get in the way of his talent and his marketing value (though he gives great production, recording at least 86 catches and 1,000 receiving yards the past four seasons).

But now we might have a better understanding of why.

A quick explanation of BPD and how it affected Marshall, via the Sun Sentinel.

"BPD is a well understood psychological disorder. It's not a form of misbehavior," said Mary Zanarini, a professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School, who treated Marshall this summer.

BPD is a mental illness that studies say is more common than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but is rarely diagnosed because of misperceptions in the mental health community, and the challenges of providing a proper treatment plan.

The disorder is marked by difficulties with relationships and self-image and controlling moods and emotions.

During Marshall's treatment at McLean, he learned how to defuse the bomb inside of his head. Now with the tools and a new perspective he's returning to the real world, to the NFL, to a marriage he admittedly broke, and to a wife who feels vilified. He must use the skills he's learned to survive, if not thrive.

Marshall had been undergoing therapy for four years, but it didn’t seem to help. But he traveled to Boston for three months of psychological and neurological exams, and he seems to have found the cause of some of his problems.

Obviously, Marshall still has many miles to go. But at least he knows what he’s dealing with now.

"By no means am I all healed or fixed," Marshall said, "but it's like a light bulb’s been turned on in my dark room."

Make sure to check out the rest of the story. It’s a good read.

Brandon Marshall talks about his mental disorder

My ex wife has BPD has wreaked havoc in my life for 12 years.  I laugh at the person below that says he left the industry because of bogus diagnosis or whatever.  That is absolutely typical of many so called professionals that don't take the time to understand BPD or the effect it has on those peoples lives.  It is the hardest on the others not the person diagnosed.  Borderline people are often extremely smart and really good at the professions they choose.  Often times they excel because they could care less how they get there or who they step on.  They simply lack empathy.  They are always right and you are always wrong.  They say one thing but mean something completely different. They put you in 'splitting' situations where you have to choose between 2 things and you are wrong whichever way you choose.  They can compulsively lie.  Borderline usually has alcoholism in their parents and abandonment usually plays a role.  It is a nasty disorder and they can either be your greatest fan or your worst freaking nightmare.  Rarely in between.  There really isn't much treatment one can do unless recently changed.  It is not something medication can usually fix.

I feel bad for Brandon but more for the people in the path of that tornado.  Him recognizing it in himself is huge!  Shame on any of you that make fun of this or dismiss it.  Living with someone like that can be hell on Earth and debilitating for their partner.

Brandon Marshall talks about his mental disorder

This article really brought out the clowns. I actually know someone with BPD and it is an extremely difficult disease for the sufferer and his/her family as well. Unless a loved one has BPD you really don't understand what it's like. I'm not saying that to be obnoxious, it's just the simple truth.

Most people understand what bipolar disorder, depression, and OCD are and how they manifest, but very few people know about borderline. The fact that Marshall has accepted and shared the diagnosis is a big deal because many people with BPD drift too far into self-absorption to understand that something is wrong with them.

If you want to understand BPD, watch the show Hoarders. Many of those folks have BPD and their hoarding is a symptom, even though the show glosses over it and just talks about hoarding as a compulsion.

Brandon Marshall talks about his mental disorder

I don't buy the BPD diagnosis. Thinking like that and a legion of mental health workers willing to diagnose it is why I left the industry. Of course when I left Multiple Personality Disorder was still consider a very real thing and you couldn't convince most psychologists it wasn't. There is a such a disorder as being an immature asshole.

What do you mean 'What a Loser' you heartless clown. He is having problems in his personal life and is atleast admitting it and seaking help. This is encouraging on his part that he is actually trying to do someting about the negative things that he is experiencing in his life. Your a loser for thinking that is wrong.

Spoken like someone who knows nothing about either topic.  Having been diagnosed as an adult with ADHD and now being treated, my world has changed 180 degrees.

Thanks for perpetuating stupidity....

Hmmm, so you as an adult with medically-diagnosed ADHD is complete justification for up to 40% of 1-5th graders being on ritalin or some other drug for ADHD in the school where my wife worked?  One teacher started sending home form letters to ALL her students suggesting they get screened for ADHD and put on medication.  There are people who have a real medical issue that benefit from ADHD medication - but don't call me stupid when there are kids in pre-school staring at the walls during playtime because of the medication for their 'condition'.

Seems like you are quick to jump to conclusions there buddy.  Maybe you should see your doctor about upping the dosage, eh?

BPD - excusing bad behavior in professional athletes like ADHD does for undisciplined brats.

Brandon Marshall talks about his mental disorder

My goodness,so many psychology majors here.Mind you, psychology majors that can`t spell at a grade five level or use grade five grammar, but it would appear doctors one and all. I asked my GP about i guy i worked with one day.The guy seemed off somehow. He was.He ended up in a mental hospital.I remember my doctor saying that your mind can get sick just like any other part of the very susceptible human body.I guess my doctor shouldn`t have wasted all those years in school and just checked here first with all the interbred redneck racists.
